FOCUS QUESTION  How did the reopening of the Silk Road effect the Renaissance?

THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES  This is a picture of Charlemagne visiting Pope Adrian I.  Feudalism was the structure of society.  Christianity spread throughout Europe.

The Renaissance Europe 1300s – 1600s

MILAN  Wealthy and powerful manufacturing center.  Workers made weapons and silk.  Northern Italy – inland.

Genoa  Became rich through overseas trade.  One of Italy’s main port cities  Port city on the coast of the Mediterranean

VENICE  Grew rich from sea trade.  One of Italy’s main port cities.  It is still known for it’s canals and glassware.  An island city of the Mediterranean.

FLORENCE  Banking and trade center. Bankers made $$$ by charging interest.  Wealthy leaders paid to beautify the city with impressive buildings and art.  Inland city in the center of Italy.

SEPARATE STATES AND RIVAL RULERS  Please look at the map on page 301 of the text.  Italy was not a single country, it was made up of independent states (not united).  In most big cities, a single rich merchant family controlled the government. This type of government was called a signoria.

MEDICI FAMILY  Wealthy, powerful banking family.  Cosimo de’ Medici was the ruler of Florence.  Beautified Florence.  Valued education  Florence became the center of Italian art, literature and culture.

MAJOR TRADING CITIES IN RENAISSANCE ITALY MILANGENOAVENICE FLORENCE How did it became wealthy? Location, location, location. Which city would you want to live in and why? Wealthy and powerful manufacturing center for weapons and Silk. Inland – Northern Italy. Became rich through overseas trade. One of Italy’s main port cities on the coast of the Mediterranean. Grew rich through sea trade. An island port city on the Mediterranean. Became wealthy as a banking and trade center. Inland - Cultural center of Italy.
