Practical Advising Follow the life of your advisees and what the University expects from you at each junction Acceptance/ConfirmationRegistration Check-In Points Degree Completion
Acceptance/Confirmation Ensure acceptance letter is available to understand expectations (any pre-requisite or co-requisite requirements) Discuss/construct plan of courses If pre-requisite or co-requisite courses are required give a timeline to completion (e.g., within first year of program) Create contract with advisee on plan of courses New Student Portal - be ready for first term
First Registration Become familiar with the basics of registration View student Registration Portal How-to registration video sent in “Registration is Open” each term (also available on WikiRecords) Check advisor registration s against course plan Review initial DCR (if available) - if needed for an advising meeting contact UR so it can be prioritized
Registration/Check-In Points Check-In Points Registration s sent to primary advisor Block programs - only courses outside of the block initiate registration s Non-block programs - every time advisee clears finance Update plan as changes arise (e.g., failed course, course not offered this term, etc.) Submit AVs as soon as possible
Grading Grades are due three (3) business days after the end of the course Repercussions of late grades include (but not limited to): Unnecessary pre-requisite holds Potential financial aid implications Potential Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) implications Inability to graduate on time
Course Scheduling Cancelled courses Students are now notified when courses in their schedule are cancelled and told to work with their advisors to select a course within their program if they require more units Identify courses to cancel early in registration process Directed/independent study courses Independent study courses are “offered to provide opportunity for a student to have a special academic experience beyond that offered in his/her regular classwork” (Academic Policy C-9, 11a) Courses listed in catalog must always be taken under their course prefix and number, regardless of class size Unless included in curriculum independent study courses cannot be used to establish financial aid or international student eligibility
Graduation Graduation Petition (non-block and off-block) Evaluate DCR and courses (all programs)
