Who created the Periodic Table? Dmitrii Mendeleev

What are the properties of metals? -they have a shiny luster, -they conduct heat and electricity, -they are malleable/ductile (can reshape)

Using the Periodic Table, what is the atomic number for Copper? 29

What is an Atom? The smallest piece of matter.

Why is the symbol for Lead not LE? Because it can’t have 2 capital letters, and in Latin is called Plumb (Pb)

What are the properties of non-metals? -Dull/not shiny. Can be gases -not conductive -non-malleable/ductile, brittle

Where are metals on the Periodic Table? On the left, in blue.

What is an Element? A pure substance, matter made of only one type of atom.

On the Periodic Table, how are all elements abbreviated? As one or two letter symbols. Only first letter is capitalized!

How can we tell one element from another? By weight or density

Where are the metalloids on the Periodic Table? On the red zig-zag between metals and non-metals

What is matter? The material things are made of. It has mass and takes up space.

Using the Periodic Table, what is the chemical symbol for Potassium? K

Is trail mix an element, a mixture, or a compound? A mixture because it can be separated back into its components

Where are the non-metals on the Periodic Table? On the right, in green.

What are the properties of metalloids? They are half metal, half non-metal. -can be shiny or not -only semi-conductive -can be malleable or not

Why don’t you find the element Potassium in the Earth’s crust? It has to be refined from oxide like all of the Alkali Metals

What is a compound? Two or more elements fused together to create something very different.

Could TD be an element? No, because it can’t have 2 capital letters

Why is water (H2O) not an element? Because it is made of 2 Elements, and is not on the periodic table! It is a COMPOUND.

Is this an element, a mixture, or a compound? A compound, because the elements are fused together.

What is the difference between a compound and an element? An element has only one type of atom while a compound is made up of 2 or more different types of atoms

What should stay constant in this experiment? The type and size of the plants, the amount of food given, amount of sun, water, and dirt for the plants, etc. Henry conducted an experiment to see if Miracle Grow really is better than other types of plant food.

Is this an element, a mixture, or a compound? A mixture of two different atoms

What 2 elements is our air mostly made of? Nitrogen 78%, Oxygen 21%

Drinking more Redbull leads to more office referrals. What conclusion could you come to based on this graph?

Is this an element, a mixture, or a compound? An element, because it is a single type of atom.

What do all quantitative observations have? A number!

Can you list the steps in the scientific method? Problem Hypothesis Experiment / Collect Data Conclusion
