2 Organizing the Elements
In 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev organized the known elements into a table based on their properties and atomic masses.

3 The Modern Periodic Table
Arranged in order of increasing atomic number. Properties of elements change in a periodic fashion from left to right across a period.

4 Attach the sheet with the 2 small periodic tables in your notebook as directed.
Use the first small periodic table for the following.

5 The Periodic Table Elements in each group have similar properties.
The columns are called groups. Group numbers 1 18 2 The rows are called periods. Period numbers Elements in each group have similar properties.

6 Group 1 elements are called the alkali metals.

7 Group 2 elements are called the alkaline earth metals.

8 Elements in Groups 3 – 12 are called the transition metals.

9 Group 13 elements are called the boron group.

10 Group 14 elements are called the carbon group.

11 Group 15 elements are called the nitrogen group.

12 Group 16 elements are called the oxygen group.

13 Group 17 elements are called the halogens.

14 Group 18 elements are called the noble gases.

15 Elements below the periodic table are called inner transition metals..

16 Groups 1,2, and 13-18 are called the representative elements.

17 Lanthanide series is the top row. Actinide series is the bottom row.

18 Use your second small periodic table for the following.

Blue – Metal Green – Metalloid Yellow – Nonmetal Pink – Noble gas Grey - Synthetic

20 Properties of Elements
Metals: Solids at room temperature Shiny Can be drawn into wires (ductile) Can be pounded into thin sheets (malleable) Conduct heat and electricity

21 Properties of Elements
Nonmetals: Gases or brittle solids at room temperature Do not conduct heat or electricity Not malleable or ductile Metalloids Physical & chemical properties of both metals & nonmetals Noble gases Low reactivity. Contains full shell of outer electrons
