Job application tips Read and follow directions EXACTLY. Fill out each and every section. When the section does not apply to you, use N/A (Not Applicable) Use blue or black pen Print clearly and legible. Use correct spelling and grammar. Be honest and accurate. Have consistency.

Do not use abbreviations (except NA and states). Keep application neat and clean. References: ask people before you use them. You want adults who will say good things about you and who will speak well of you. DO NOT use relatives or friends. Examples: teachers, former employers, parents’ friends Don’t forget to sign and date.

Position desired: specify the position/job title; don’t use “any” Salary: use “open” or “negotiable” Reason left: use positive phrases such as: To take a job with more responsibility, moved, seasonal, business closed, job or contract ended, temporary work, laid off, reorganization, returned to school, will explain in interview Don’t use negative phrases: fired, quit, absenteeism, tardiness; didn’t like boss Specific areas on job applications
