Because they were no longer under the government of Virginia Company and they had to establish their own form of government 2. a document drafted by the passengers of the Mayflower 3. established an organized and orderly government before they went ashore. 4. It is a key piece in the development of a representative, democratic government in America.

What role did William Bradford and Squanto play in the founding of Plymouth Colony? 1. William Bradford was one of the first leaders of the Plymouth settlement who helped establish relations with Native Americans thus insuring their survival. 2. Squanto was an English-speaking, Native American who befriended the colonists, teaching them how to fish, where to hunt, and what to farm. He was key to their survival in the first few years. He also played a vital role in their relations with the Wampanoag Indians.
