4 A. Religious Disagreements (p. 128)
England became a Protestant country in 1534, when King Henry VIII broke away from the Roman Catholic Church and formed the Anglican Church. The king’s excuse for making the change had more to do with personal reasons than it did with religion.

5 B. Puritans and Separatists (p. 128)
Many Anglicans wanted to “purify” their church by getting rid of all Roman Catholic influences. Some of these “Puritans” tried to change the Anglican Church from within, but some refused to worship there. Known as Separatists, they left the church and worshipped by themselves; they often faced abuse, harassment, and persecution.

6 C. Pilgrims (p. 129) Some Separatists moved to the Netherlands, a country known for its religious tolerance. They called themselves Pilgrims, a term for travelers with a religious goal. They never felt at home in the Netherlands, so a group of Pilgrims decided to move to America.

7 Pilgrim Clothing: Myth vs. Reality

8 D. Pilgrims Set Sail (p. 129) In September 1620, the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, England, with about 100 men, women, and children. Driven off course during a storm, the Mayflower came to rest at the tip of Cape Cod (Massachusetts). They decided to make an agreement, called the Mayflower Compact, before they went ashore.

9 E. Landing at Plymouth (p. 130)
Led by Governor William Bradford, the Pilgrims searched for nearly a month before they found Plymouth harbor. The Pilgrims suffered their own “starving time” before encountering the nearby and friendly Wampanoag tribe. One of the Wampanoags, Squanto, taught the Pilgrims how to hunt, plant corn, and where to fish.

10 F. Plymouth Survives (p.131)
Thanks to the help of the nearby Wampanoags, the Pilgrims had an abundant harvest in 1621, which they shared in North America’s first Thanksgiving. Pilgrims believed that God had put them in America to live as a truly Christian community.

11 Review: 24. Who were the Puritans?
25. Who were the Separatists (and what did they call themselves)? 26. What was the name of the Pilgrim ship? 27. What was the name of the agreement the Pilgrims made before they set foot on land? 28. Who was the Pilgrim leader? 29. Where did the Pilgrims finally settle? 30. Who taught the Pilgrims how to hunt, farm, and fish? 31. What holiday do we trace back to the Pilgrims at Plymouth?
