2 Religious Disagreement in England
King Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church 1534 Formed the Anglican church Many people wanted to be Catholic again

3 Puritans and Separatists
Wanted to “purify” the Anglican church and get rid of Catholic influences in it Separatists Left the Anglican church and would not worship there Attacked for their beliefs and shut out of communities

4 Pilgrims Moved away from England to Leyden, Netherlands
They could worship their religion freely here Still feel out of place Difficult to earn a living Children influenced too much by the Dutch Move to America and start their own religious community

5 Starting the Plymouth Colony

7 The Mayflower Compact Pilgrims landed outside the charter area so they need some laws to govern the people Agreement made before they went ashore 41 men signed the Mayflower Compact Set up self government Laws passed by the majority John Carver was chosen as governor of the colony

8 Landing at Plymouth Settled on cleared land that had once been a Native American village “Starving Time” occurred that winter Half of the colonist died William Bradford 2nd governor of Plymouth “Many died in January and February being infected with scurvy and other diseases.”

Samoset appears in March and speaks English Massasoit Chief of the Wampanoags Squanto Taught the Pilgrims how to hunt, plant corn, and catch fish Acted as interpreter and kept the peace between colonists and Native Americans

10 Plymouth Survives First Thanksgiving
1621 Abundant harvest thanks to Native American help Served corn bread, wild game birds, greens, venison, and shellfish An official charter is granted in 1621 Colony grows slowly 300 settlers by 1630 3,000 settlers by 1660
