1. Jamestown Review
8.2 Trace and explain the founding of Jamestown, including: the Virginia Company, James River, John Smith, Pocahontas, Powhatan, John Rolfe, “starving time”, Tobacco, Bacon’s Rebellion, Indentured servants and slaves, The arrival of women, House of Burgesses

2. The Virginia Company
1606 would receive a charter to establish a colony in North America from King James I
They would be looking for gold, a place to have a secure lasting settlement, and a route to the Pacific
May of 1607 the settlers would land just off the James River about 60 miles away from Chesapeake Bay (the original destination)
Would be attacked by Powhatan Indians often
Native American Attacks, disease, and famine would greatly affect the settlement

3. John Smith
The Powhatans would eventually start trading with the colonist which would help with the predicaments they had encountered
John Smith was really good with the Natives and Trade
Would get injured and sent back to England
“starving time” winter of
Out of 300 settlers, roughly 60 would make it out of this time period

4. John Rolfe New settlers would be sent to bring the colony back to life
After Smith left the colony, relations with the Natives went downhill
John Rolfe would mend unresolved issues with the Powhatan Natives by marrying the Chief’s daughter, Pocahontas
Also had the idea to start growing tobacco to help bring in some profits to the colony- this will be a key idea that keeps the colony going

5. The House of Burgess
The idea of forming one’s own government would draw settlers to Jamestown
Jamestown had burgesses- representatives who made laws for the colony
The House of Burgess (1618) would be the first form of legislature in North America

6. Indentured Servants
Arrival of African Americans in Jamestown would happen around July/August of 1619.
They were NOT slaves
They worked for several years (typically 7) as a laborer in exchange for passage to America (Indentured Servant)
Slavery would not come to America, specifically Virginia, until the 1680s with the Triangular Trade and the Colombian Exchange

7. Royal Colony
Chief Powhatan would die and his brother would take over as Chief to the Powhatan Indians
He would lead surprise attacks on the colonist and their new tobacco farms
Many settles died during the attacks
The King in England would eventually revoke the charter from the Virginia Company making Jamestown a royal colony-under the rule of English Government

8. Bacon’s Rebellion 1676 William Berkeley was governor of Virginia
Makes agreement with Natives to no longer take their land
Colonist disagree, want to expand
Nathaniel Bacon would lead a rebellion- member of the House of Burgesses and relative of Berkeley
Would state that Berkeley was corrupt, attacked Natives, burned down Jamestown
Bacon would get sick and die not long after the start of his Rebellion. The rebellion would die with him

9. William Penn
Would be the founder of Pennsylvania (Sylvania meaning woods)
Joined the Quakers at the age of 22
Quakers obeyed their “inner light”, which they believed came directly from God
They refused to bow or take off their hats to any man and refused to take up arms (participate in violence or wars)
Quakers were often persecuted in England, which would lead to the founding of Pennsylvania

10. William Penn (cont.)
Penn actually stayed in England for most of Pennsylvania's development
Drafted the rules: free and fail trial by jury, freedom of religion, freedom from unjust imprisonment and free elections.
Penn received the land of what is now Pennsylvania from his farther.
King Charles II of England had a large loan owed to Penn’s father
He paid William Penn by giving him the lad West and South of New Jersey in 1681
