Athena SWAN - Bronze Award

Key Areas for Improvement After a thorough analysis of the Department through surveys and focus groups we have identified five key areas for improvement: 1.Lack of senior female clinical academic staff in Surgery 2.Quality of the PRDP appraisal process 3.Mentorship 4.External perception of a male orientated culture 5.Outreach to encourage young women to enter careers in academic surgery

What we’ve done so far:  Put together a three year action plan to review the culture of the Department and create a more level playing field for all  Identified Divisional champions to support the initiatives: o CancerCharlotte Bevan & Sarah Blagden o CSMMuireann Coen o IRDBKate Hardy o SurgerySanjay Purkayastha & Roger Kneebone  Set up a mentoring scheme - aim to launch late October  Launched a new Lifestyles page providing information on: o Support and development opportunities o Clarified maternity/paternity information o A blog highlighting achievements and news in the Department  Improved existing staff database to capture data required by Athena SWAN

What we’re going to do:  Extend our outreach programmes to encourage engagement from an early age  Develop mechanisms to support students, postdocs and staff in choices and career progression including enhanced PRDP  Invest time in understanding and supporting postdoc progression into academic roles through promoting the Postdoc Development Centre and recruiting postdoc reps at all sites  Clarify academic promotion process and develop support through training, clearer guidelines and mentoring  Increase female participation in academic promotions and appointment panels  Enhance induction information and training for new starters
