2 Department of Zoology Reasons for conducting a staff survey: Improve two-way communication Develop an understanding of employee views and opinions Identify areas for improvement, helping maximise employee engagement Prioritise work plans and strategy, including Athena SWAN submissions Monitor diversity practices and aid staff wellbeing Benchmark against others in same sector (and trends over time)

10 Department of Zoology Where do we need to improve? On many questions, Zoology staff answered positively relative to the School mean, including: feeling recognized, feeling informed and being consulted. Zoology has a high “engagement index” (feelgood factor), 78% vs 72%; and a high confidence that action will be taken as a result of this survey (47% vs 40%). But in what follows, we will focus on questions where there is a significant (~ >10%) negative variation from the School mean across different staff groupings. These are likely to indicate areas where the Department, and/or School and/or University need to do better.

11 Department of Zoology Staff groups: Contract Research Staff (1) Contract research staff in Zoology (n = 21-34) had >10% variance in the negative direction from the School mean for the following questions (top 5):- I think there are sufficient opportunities for career progression at the University My local induction gave me the information and knowledge I need to do my job effectively I understand how pay is determined My probation was well managed The career development / promotion processes at the University are fair

12 Department of Zoology Staff groups: Contract Research Staff (2) Female contract research staff in Zoology had >10% variance in the negative direction from male research staff for the following questions (top 5):- I know where to find out about benefits and the additional advantages of working here (e.g. access to museums, exhibitions, etc) The career development / promotion processes at the University are fair I can manage any stress experienced in my role, so as not to impact on my work or my wellbeing I understand how pay is determined In my experience, there is good communication between the different parts of the University

13 Department of Zoology Staff groups: Assistant staff Assistant staff had >10% variance in the negative direction from the School mean for the following questions (top 5):- My local induction gave me the information and knowledge I need to do my job effectively I think there are sufficient opportunities for career progression at the University I am satisfied with the support the University offers to help me balance my work and home life I was clear when my probation came to an end Considering my duties and responsibilities, I feel my pay is fair

16 Department of Zoology Gender differences (1) – within Zoology Women in Zoology were >10% more negative than men in Zoology about the following questions: I am able to take ownership and responsibility across the duties of my role I found my last SRD meeting (appraisal) useful I would feel able to report bullying or harassment without worrying that it would have a negative impact on me I see my future as working at the University of Cambridge I understand how pay is determined

17 Department of Zoology Gender differences (2) – Zoology / School Women in Zoology were more negative than women in the School about the following questions (top 6): I see my future as working at the University of Cambridge I am aware of the senior academic promotions process I think there are sufficient opportunities for career progression at the University I know where to find out about benefits and the additional advantages of working here I understand how pay is determined I am able to take ownership and responsibility across the duties of my role

18 Department of Zoology Potential areas for investigation / action More information about, and support for, career progression and promotion Better communication of additional benefits (e.g. access to museums, staff discounts, exhibitions etc.): Remuneration – understand issues and raise at appropriate level Feedback and opportunities to discuss personal development – including use of induction, probation, mentoring, appraisal, training: the Department needs more consistent approaches  Action Planning: 47% believe action will be taken on the results (against 40% for the School)
