2 What is ENIAC ? The ENIAC Joint Undertaking (JU) is a public- private partnership focusing on nanoelectronics that brings together ENIAC Member/Associated States, the European Commission, and AENEAS (an association representing European R&D actors in this field). It has been set up for a period up to 31 December 2017.

Objectives 3 The ENIAC Joint Undertaking contributes to the implementation of the Seventh Framework Programme and the theme 'Information and Communication Technologies' of the Specific Programme 'Cooperation'. It will, in particular: a) Define and implement a Research Agenda b) Award funding to participants c) Mobilise both public and private efforts to increase overall R&D investments d) Achieve synergy and coordination of European R&D efforts e) Promote the participation of SMEs

Structure of ENIAC 4

Process and Budget Funding decisions under the ENIAC JU Annual Work Programme are made on the basis of competitive calls for proposals. Evaluation is completed by a review process carried out by independent experts. The R&D activities supported by the European Union, financial contributions from ENIAC member States, and in-kind contributions by R&D organizations participating in projects. 5

KET Call ENIAC KET Call published on 4 May 2012 The Maltese Government committed €1.75m to the KET Call for implementation of pilot lines in industry in Key Enabling Technologies (KET), in this case in Microelectronics. Two applications received: ST-Malta and University of Malta 6

LAB4MEMS Applicants: ST-Malta and University of Malta in an ENIAC pilot line project entitled Lab4MEMS, being coordinated by ST-Italy. The total cost of the project is €28.5m, with 21 partners from 10 countries. Malta’s share is around 4.5 M. Implementation of two pilot lines one in ST’s facility in Agrate (Milan) and the other in ST’s facility in Malta. The pilot line is fundamental for ST's continued presence in Malta as well as for the continued innovative development of STMicroelectronics as a major European corporation in Microelectronics. 7
