3 The basics of the Lyon Declaration  Scope: Ground transport research and promotion of the European Research Area 2020 Vision – commitment to contribute to its implementation.  Vision : To develop world-leading scientific and technical excellence in Europe through coordination and cooperative actions at European level and interface them at global level through existing and new partnerships.  Contribution to ERA 2020 governance by: o adhering to the Fifth European Freedom especially to human resource aspects including gender equality, o quality of research infrastructures, o open access to knowledge, o open trans-national physical or virtual networks, o autonomy of research organisations o education and training of the young researchers o evaluation and joint programming o international cooperation o proper content. DETRA - Developing European Transport Research Area - a strategic EU funded project aimed at making an analysis of the state of the European Research Area (ERA) in the transport domain and to achieving the ERA objectives in order to address the Grand Challenges.

4 ETRA was created as a necessary next step in order to: Provide a structure for the interchange of knowledge and make joint efforts to foster research results through to their full implementation; Promote the setting of joint transport research priorities and coordinate research programmes and initiatives; Promote cooperation in all relevant areas and, where possible, develop cross-modal and interdisciplinary joint research activities (including JRIs), Prepare common position papers (e.g. SRA, road maps) on key transport related issues for added value to the transport users and the community as a whole; Jointly strengthen the European research expertise, research infrastructures and mobility of researchers through specific joint actions and initiatives; Promote the uptake of European transport expertise and innovation internationally; Support the continued development of TRA as the major European and international Conference bringing together all stakeholders in the sector.

5 The ETRA was created in Brussels on September 20 th 2012 by five European Transport Research Associations in the presence of the Commission

6 Key areas of ETRA activity 1/2 Mobility for Researchers Closer cooperation between research Organisations and end- users in order to establish the transport PhD proposed within the DETRA project and other coordinated and commonly promoted courses aimed at young transport researchers. World-class transport Research infrastructures Promote Europe - wide – or even world – wide cooperation in maintaining and using transport research infrastructures from databases to large-scale testing facilities.

7 Key areas of ETRA activity 2/2 Strengthening research institutions Strengthening networks of cooperating research Organisations and reducing fragmentation in the sector. Sharing knowledge...... between research organisations and industry in the transport sector and between research organisations and the general public and civil society organisations and promote the proper standardisation and transferring of research results to the market. Optimising research programmes and identifying priorities Establishing common priorities and missing elements in producing an overall recommendation for transport research.. International cooperation
