Unit4 Religions in China It is taking advantage of the combination of the political power, imperial power and religious power that Confucianism has become the national religion. And in Han dynasty,it was placed in the dominant position. Confucius was respected as a sage, laying the foundation of Confucianism. Mencius and Master Xun inherited this religion and further developed it. The most important element in Confucian ideas is that everything in life is relational. Moreover, it lays stress on self-cultivation,interpersonal harmony as well as world harmony. During about 2,000-year development, Confucianism is regarded as the mainstay supplemented with Taoism and Buddhism. Taoism arose later than Confucianism. It has a native root, evolving from the religious beliefs in the ancient society and featuring the ideology of the Han nationality. It revered Master Lao as its founder. And later Master Zhuang made a great contribution to Taoist development. Taoism considers that everything in the universe evolves from “Tao“ (way). Tao is the origin of the everlasting word. 上一页 下一页 返回

Unit4 Religions in China It is endless in time and space. Taoism goes after preservation of health and immortality; its uttermost goal is to become an immortal being. Ordinary people can be carefree and live forever when they have Tao. It also stresses following way, discarding all advanced equipments and returning to a simple state. Confucianism and Taoism are indigenous to China, while Buddhism was a foreign religion. It spread to China from India during the Eastern Han dynasty. Then it began to absorb Chinese ideas adapting itself to Confucianism and Taoism, and changing in many ways. As a result, it had become a humanistic religion in China from an Indian religion of non-ego. During the 3rd to 6th centuries A. D. it enjoyed great popularity, and shaped Chinese life and culture. As a theistic religion, its god is Sakyamuni, and its doctrine is based on transmigration. It is featured by its combination of concern love and redeeming for the ultimate outcome. 上一页 下一页 返回
