Presentation transcript:

Intern as a Sport Coordinator By: Bianca Parker Internship Dr. Lawson Williams

Goals: Being able to intern at the Mccory YMCA, I plan on getting a lot of experience out of it, during and after. Working with older people, is just a learning aspect I plan on getting when it comes to how they lived their life, and what they did that made them who they are today. Working with Kids, leading them into a better direction, and teaching them the important aspects to life.   Getting to know the kids and work with them, helping them understand that they matter in this world, and whatever it is they want to do, to go for it 100 percent. Guiding the children while they are younger, and helping them learn how to research, and interact with people that will help them learn about the world. I plan on sticking with it, making sure that the kids succeed in what they want to do, and not from what they see others doing. Being able to follow their hearts, and surrounding themselves with those who shows positive vibes.

Meeting Intern Instructor: First Day: I was able to meet my supervisor Sam Howard. Sam is an alumnus from Johnson C. Smith University. I was then introduced to Ms. Deidra, his assistant, who I will also be helping out during my experience. Sam showed me around the facility, and explained to me what I will be doing; which will involve the help in organizing summer league basketball games, assisting practices during the evenings, and also summer camps. It had also been mentioned, that he wants to see how well I can help Ms. Deidra schedule appointments, and send emails that involves game times, or if anyone has any questions about any programs.

Working with Ms. D: As a start of my internship experience, I began working with Ms. D. From there with the early dismissal Ms. D had asked me to send out emails to parents who child had participated in spring sports, inference to the end of the season’s celebration they plan on having for the children. I then had to send another email to the coaches as well, informing them about the celebration.

Cancellation of Banquet:   Today at my internship, I had to send out emails to the parents about the end of the season celebration. Informing them that it had been cancelled, due to coaches availability, and playoff games still going on.   I had to go into the YMCA system where they keep all their sport information documented, making sure the names that were kept in a red folder, had been updated into the system.

Testing my Skills Sam had wanted to test my skills in figuring out how to make a set schedule for summer camps. He mentioned  how important it was for me to understand the method in knowing how to make schedules, in case I wanted to follow in his shoes. He gave me examples to go by, and it was up to me to try and figure out how to make the schedule. Sam also mentioned in case I wanted to come up with my own business, or become a manger, I would have the skills in knowing how to set times for my employers, making sure their times and hours equal up to a certain amount.

Summer League Rosters I had to make the summer league rosters for the different age groups that signed up for summer league basketball. Once I finished I had to go into the Y-life website, making sure all the names on the roster were put into the Y-life system. I then checked in with Sam letting him know I had completed the roster.

Prepping for Sport Banquet I had help set up for the end of the season sport banquet. This involved putting up tables, decorating them, putting out chairs, and setting up the trophies for all those who participated. I also, help serve the parents and their children with dinner that had been prepped for them as well. Once the banquet was over, I helped clean up making sure all the tables and chairs were put away.

Trophy collection: I had to look through all of the Spring sport trophies, making sure the names were spelled correctly on them.

Overall Experience My overall internship experience involved being in the office majority of the time. I would send out emails, answer phone calls, or putting together teams for the summer league sport programs.
