EARLY APPROVAL WHAT TO WORK ON THIS SUMMER

PORTFOLIO Get a 2-inch binder and a bunch of page protectors Put a placeholder for each required item in a page protector so you know what items you need to complete Add completed items to your binder as you go Include a copy of your guidelines and create a table of contents with sections for each major part of the guidelines Include dividers for each major section of the guidelines

MENTOR Find a mentor if you haven’t already Get them to sign the mentor contract Begin working together on hours and professional terms Complete formal interview and have them fill out and sign the interviewee form Take a picture working with him or her and get a business card for your portfolio Once you’ve completed at least half of your hours, complete the mentor conference form If and when you finish ALL your hours, complete the mentor reflection and have them assess your project.

HOURS Fill out log of hours and get initials from mentor or other adult supervisor as you go Collect evidence, take pictures, and continue adding to your portfolio Evidence could include notes, rough drafts, failed attempts, video and pictures at each stage of progress Complete 40 hours of hands-on and document

PROFESSIONAL INTERVIEW Interview someone in your career field in addition to your mentor questions/answers Record and/or take notes for typing up later Have them fill out and sign the interviewee form and get a business card or take a picture with him or her.

PROFESSIONAL TERMS Work with your mentor to create a professional glossary of 15 terms and definitions that are necessary for someone to know to operate in your chosen career field Example: Nursing Code Blue: A medical emergency in which a team of medical personnel work to revive an individual in cardiac arrest. Example: Construction Cross Beam: A horizontal or transverse beam, especially a structural beam resting on two supports.

COLLEGE VISIT Summer is a great time to visit schools You may visit more than one but at least one visit is required Take the tour, take notes, and take at least one picture of yourself on the campus Collect pamphlets and brochures for documentation Write a one page paper describing your visit, your experience there, people you met, and what you thought of the tour and campus.

JOB SHADOW OR CAREER RELATED EVENT Job shadow someone in your career field (your mentor or someone else) for at least four hours Take notes and pictures of your experience Write a one page paper about the day (see guidelines for details) Have the person you job shadow fill out and sign the job shadow verification form Get a business card from the person and any flyers or brochures available at their workplace for evidence OR Attend an event (at least 4 hours) that is directly related to your career path. Take pictures and notes and collect other evidence to prove your attendance Have event supervisor sign your log of hours Write a one page paper about the event, what you learned, how it benefited you, etc. (see guidelines for details)

LOG OF HOURS AND JOURNALS As you complete hours, write a journals for each activity or group of hours. Journal entries should cover the who, what, when, where and why of the activity or hours and show new learning gained from those experiences. Also include the date and number of hours covered by the journal entry. Edit for conventions. Log of hours Fill out the log of hours as you go for hands-on hours completed. Have your mentor or other supervisor initial hours as you complete them. Include the when and where for all hours completed.
