Technology Needs Assessment Presentation for Los Fresnos HS Technology Leadership EDTC 6342.60 Project 3 Jaime Villarreal

Texas School Technology and Readiness (STaR) Chart The Texas Teacher STaR Chart has been developed around the four key areas of the Long-Range Plan for Technology, 2006-2020: Teaching and Learning; Educator Preparation and Development; Leadership, Administration and Instructional Support; Infrastructure for Technology.

First the Star Chart analysis was made of the years 2008-2009, 2009-2010 and 2010- 2011. The areas that revealed a need of a more specific analysis were the following: Technology Applications (applying technology into curriculum or teks) Use of Online Learning Professional Development Instructional Support Technical Support

Los Fresnos High School Campus STaR Chart Data Analysis Key Area 1: Teaching and Learning 1=Early Tech 2=Developing Tech 3=Advanced Tech 4-Target Tech 2008-2009 2009-2010 2010-2011 TL1 Patterns of classroom use 2 TL2 Frequency/Design of Inst. Setting 3 TL3 Content Area Connections TL4 Technology Applications TL5 Student Mastery of Technology Applications TL6 Online Learning Total 16 14 15 Teaching & Learning focuses on the instructional needs of teachers and the learning needs of students in meeting the vision of technology in education. A decrease is noted in the second year in the areas Technology Applications and Online learning. There was an increase in the third year only in Technology Applications.

Los Fresnos High School Campus STaR Chart Data Analysis Key Area 2: Educator Preparation and Development 1=Early Tech 2=Developing Tech 3=Advanced Tech 4-Target Tech 2008-2009 2009-2010 2010-2011 EP1 Professional Development Experiences 3 2 EP2 Models of Professional Development EP3 Capabilities of Educators EP4 Access to Professional Development EP5 Levels of Understanding & Patterns of Use EP6 Professional Development for Online Learning Total 14 12 15 Educator Preparation and Development addresses the staff development needs for all the members of the professional education community. There was a decrease in the second year in Professional Development, Levels of Understanding and Patterns of use. There was an increase in the third year in Models and Access of Professional Development and Level of Understandings and Patterns of Use.

There was a decrease in the second year in the area of instructional support, communication, collaboration and budget. In the third year there was a slight increase in instructional support, communication, collaboration and leadership and support for online learning.

Los Fresnos High School Campus STaR Chart Data Analysis Key Area 4: Infrastructure for Technology 1=Early Tech 2=Developing Tech 3=Advanced Tech 4-Target Tech 2008-2009 2009-2010 2010-2011 INF1 Students Per Computers 3 2 INF2 Internet Access Connectivity Speed 4 INF3 Other Classroom Technology INF4 Technical Support INF5 Local Area Network Wide Area Network INF6 Distance Learning Capacity Total 20 14 18 Infrastructure for Technology focuses on hardware, software, and human infrastructure (the capabilities or proficiencies of those who use the technical components). The infrastructure of a school is the critical element of support for all four areas of the Long-Range Plan for Technology. There was a decrease in the second year in all sections and a slight increase in some sections in the third year.

Technology Goals Teaching and Learning To improve the academic achievement and technology literacy of all students A progressive implementation of the Technology Academy will continue at the High School in order to improve instruction and learning and comply with the Technology Application TEKS Ch. 126

Have you received training on using online learning? Professional Development Has the technology training you’ve received been helpful in the improvement of student performance? How would you rate the technology training you have received: a) very helpful b) somewhat helpful c) not helpful Instructional Support When creating lessons that require using technology is there someone in the administrative team that provides assistance when needed? For which of the following reasons did you stop using a specific technology tool in the classroom: a) lack of troubleshooting support b) lack of training c) fear of technology d) bad experience e) none Technical Support When experiencing difficulties with instructional technology have you received help within reasonable time? What has been the most effective way of obtain technical support when needed? a)phone call b)email c) campus work order d) none

Needs Assessment Survey

Needs Assessment Survey

Survey Results http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/K577CB7

These two questions demonstrate that teachers have been trained to use technology in the classroom but not enough to remove the difficulties being experienced in the implementation.

Teacher are showing high interest in obtaining specific technology training in their subject area. In question 4 only 40% of teachers surveyed have received training on online learning.

There is a greater number of teachers surveyed that state that the technology training received has had an positive impact in the improvement of student performance. The rating given to the technology training was an even spit between “very helpful” and “somewhat helpful”.

When creating lessons the require using technology only half of the surveyed teachers had access to administrative assistance. The leading reasons for the lack of using technology included lack of training and troubleshooting support.

Based on these two questions it could be concluded that the best method to receive on time assistance for technology implementation is by campus work order.

Conclusion Based on the needs assessment survey that was administered to the math department at Los Fresnos High School we come to the following recommendations: Subject specific technology training is needed. Online training is needed and will become useful in providing further training in the form of webinars. Provide a specific contact person of support for teachers within the administrative team. Monitor and keep log of troubleshooting concerns that need to be addressed immediately.
