 Good morning girls! Do Now: On a new sheet of loose-leaf paper please answer the following question Why are we studying World History?

Who are Historians?  They are scholars who study and write about the past  They are people just like you!  Rely on documents and written records

What do historians do?  Rely on artifacts to give details of the past  Artifacts: clothing, coins, artwork, tombstones  Historians are like detectives- they determine the causes and effects of events that have happened in the past.

Roles of Historians  Historians try to piece together many different pieces of information together to understand the overall event.  Historians try to give a straightforward account but it can be bias.

What is Anthropology?  Anthropology- the study of human life and culture.  Culture includes:  What people wear  How they organize society  What they value

Class question!  Based on what we now know about anthropology, write down what you know about the culture you live in.  Turn to a partner and discuss what parts of culture you came up with!

What is Anthropology?  Anthropology is the study of past societies  Anthropologists study artifacts that have been left behind  This is how we learned about prehistory  Prehistory- a time in history when there are no written records.

What is Archeology?  Archeology is the study of past societies through analysis of what people left behind.  The remains include: buildings, tools, weapons, pottery, clothing, jewelry.  Archeology is a way to learn about prehistory  *Prehistory is before written records*

How can Archeologists tell how old something is?  Archeologists use radioactive carbon dating  When using radioactive carbon, archeologists can then estimate how old the object/artifact is.  Ancient DNA is providing new information on human evolution.

Primary Sources  A document or physical object that was written during the event.  Original documents  Examples: Diaries, autobiographies, pottery

Examples of Primary Sources “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”- Mahatma Gandhi “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”- Walt Disney

Secondary Sources  Sources/writing that interprets and analyzes primary sources.  Secondary sources get their information from multiple different primary sources  Examples: textbooks, magazine articles, encyclopedias

Scenario  Suppose that 2000 years from now someone found a time capsule from our time. In that time capsule is a Mercy ID card, a Mercy yearbook, a David’s cookie wrapper, and a One Direction poster. What do you think they would learn?
