What is History? Do Now: On a new sheet of loose-leaf paper please answer the following question Why are we studying World History?

2 Who are Historians? They are scholars who study and write about the past They are people just like you! Rely on documents and written records

3 What do historians do? Rely on artifacts to give details of the past
Artifacts: clothing, coins, artwork, tombstones Historians are like detectives- they determine the causes and effects of events that have happened in the past.

4 Roles of Historians Historians try to piece together many different pieces of information together to understand the overall event. Historians try to give a straightforward account but it can be bias.

5 What is Anthropology? Anthropology- the study of human life and culture. Culture includes: What people wear How they organize society What they value

7 What is Anthropology? Anthropology is the study of past societies
Anthropologists study artifacts that have been left behind This is how we learned about prehistory Prehistory- a time in history when there are no written records.

8 What is Archeology? Archeology is the study of past societies through analysis of what people left behind. The remains include: buildings, tools, weapons, pottery, clothing, jewelry. Archeology is a way to learn about prehistory *Prehistory is before written records*

10 How can Archeologists tell how old something is?
Archeologists use radioactive carbon dating When using radioactive carbon, archeologists can then estimate how old the object/artifact is. Ancient DNA is providing new information on human evolution.

11 Primary Sources A document or physical object that was written during the event. Original documents Examples: Diaries, autobiographies, pottery

12 Examples of Primary Sources

13 Secondary Sources Sources/writing that interprets and analyzes primary sources. Secondary sources get their information from multiple different primary sources Examples: textbooks, magazine articles, encyclopedias

14 Scenario Suppose that 2000 years from now someone found a time capsule from our time. In that time capsule is a Mercy ID card, a Mercy yearbook, a David’s cookie wrapper, and a One Direction poster. What do you think they would learn?
