How can I do Well in this Class? – Discussion Boards Discussions will be the backbone of our learning!  Answer each question: TWO “meaty” paragraphs each (5 sentences+ = paragraph). Be careful! Some units have two questions!  TWO responses per question: ONE “meaty” paragraph each  Thursday, Saturday, Monday? or Friday, Sunday, Tuesday? (3x/wk.) Grade:Grading Criteria A: points  Responses are on topic, original, and contribute to the quality of the discussion.  Responses make frequent, informed references to unit material—use terms from the text, please.  Responses are clearly written—please do not “text”; proofread/edit your work.  Responses meet posted length requirements.  Two or more responses per thread to classmates that are thoughtful and advance the discussion.

How can I do Well in this Class? – Weekly Seminars Seminars will improve your performance!  Students feel a stronger sense of connection.  Students network with each other.  Students make lasting relationships.  Students are more clear on what is expected of them.  Students make less mistakes and achieve higher scores.

How can I do Well in this Class? – Projects Projects will enable you to showcase your knowledge!  Four projects altogether (Units 2, 4, 7, and 9)  Follow the explicit instructions and rubrics in DBs/Doc Sharing.  View the 5-minute tutorial in each set of instructions.  Use the example papers as your templates.  Anything submitted after Saturday is considered late and will be marked down accordingly to the syllabus late policy. Grade:Grading Criteria A: points  Essay demonstrates ability to express and evaluate values and terms of art or architecture.  Project explains the purpose of art to the individual and its universal appeal.  Project uses vocabulary terms from the unit.  Project is clearly written—minimal grammatical, mechanical, and formatting errors.  Project meets posted length requirements—and follows directions.

Common “Faux Pas” to Avoid Extra (hard to detect) spaces between paragraphs—learn how to get rid of them by viewing the tutorial in Doc Sharing. Running head—learn how to make one by viewing the tutorial in Doc Sharing (or use one of the example papers as the template ; it is already formatted!). Periods outside quotation marks—they go inside 100% of the time, unless there is a citation; then they go outside the citation. Commas outside quotation marks—they go inside 100% of the time. Semicolons: try to use them only with commas in complicated lists. See APA, 2010, p. 90. Numbers 1-9 as numbers—only numbers 10 + are spelled out in APA style. Stay away from the APA formatting tool in Word! It will not miraculously format your work! Consider investing in the APA manual (2010, p. 198+), which has numerous examples for you to copy! Save the PDF in Doc Sharing for future reference. Consult the APA blog. NOTE: Have someone proofread your work before submission to catch minor spelling and punctuation errors.

Project # 1 (due Tuesday, 3/13) Go here now: Part I: Architecture Analyze a piece of architecture from your community Part II: Art Analyze a work of art from your community  Civic art, sculpture, an image in your home  Graffiti  Street performance, etc.  Be sure to follow the directions carefully!!  Please limit to at or slightly over 750 words.  Use the example paper as your template!  Include an intro & conclusion!  Be sure to explain detail!  Apply concepts from Chapter 4!  Late work will be graded down.
