What do you think? Might music pre-exist language? Love for and appreciation of music is a universal feature of human culture (Vaidya, 2004).

Music is Universal  How?  Why?  Examples? (Fotosearch, 2011)

Kinds of Music  Name a concert/ show you have been to.  What period of music was it from or what style of music was it?  Symphony  Hip-hop  Ragtime  Rock  Jazz  Folk  Spiritual  Pop

Why? If only one genre of music was available for mankind to listen to what would it be? (Fotosearch, 2011)

Music and Emotion  Several characteristics have been suggested that might influence the emotion of music:  Major keys and rapid tempos cause happiness  Slow tempos cause sadness  Rapid tempos together with dissonance cause fear  Can you think of movies, soap operas, TV shows that remind you of this?

Background Music  Is it intended to encourage close attention?  Become a “foreground” listener. Where would you expect to hear background music?

Gender Specific Music  Are female performers having trouble competing in what is still a male-dominated scene?  Do you prefer male to female performers, or vice versa? (Starplus, 2011)
