6. Course Basics: Seminars Nine weekly audio Seminars (60 min. in length) Mondays 7 pm (ET) -- Section 13 – A required component of the course. Shoot for 15- 20 posts each seminar. – Graded (10 pts. possible; based on attendance and participation). – Alternative assignment (“Option 2”) available if you miss the live seminar.

7. What If You Miss a Seminar!? Seminar Option 2 Requires students to listen to the recording of the current week’s seminar and respond to that week’s Option 2 question in about 250 words. 8. Sample Option 2 Assignment Unit 3 Review the archive and write 3 questions that you have about the interview process. Then, you can write about your interviewee selection, other possible primary research you could conduct such as a survey, or find a creative way to brainstorm about your topic this week. Write a poem, sketch out an advertisement, or discuss why the big idea you selected is important to you!

10. 100 words You're right that it's good to keep your audience in mind and how formal or informal your language should be in a particular situation. I've encountered situations in which a speaker or a writer goes too far in one direction on another. For example, I recall a fairly formal event in which the speaker used conversational turns of phrases (like "you guys" and "we're gonna") that seemed out of place under the circumstances. But it's also easy to find examples of professional writing that is more formal than it needs to be, with impersonal phrases like "as per your request" and "enclosed please find.
