VEGETARIANISM By: Hillary Anger

Vegetarianism Vegetarianism: encompasses the practice of following plant-based diets (fruits, vegetables, etc.), with or without the inclusion of dairy products or eggs, and with the exclusion of meat (red meat, poultry, fish).

Vegetarian? Why? - I enjoy helping the environment. - I Love all the health benefits it offers me. - It is a way to get flavor a natural way. - Eating like this makes me feel good about myself. - It’s a way of life that most can’t do, and I am proud that I am doing it.

3 great reasons to switch to a plant- based diet:  YOU'LL LIVE A LOT LONGER. Vegetarians live about seven years longer than a person who eats red meat.  YOU'LL SAVE YOUR HEART. Cholesterol levels for vegetarians are 14 percent lower than meat eaters. Fruits and vegetables are full of antioxidant nutrients that protect the heart and its arteries  YOUR BONES WILL LAST LONGER. The average bone loss for a vegetarian woman is ½ compared to non-vegetarian women Cause: consumption of excess protein. Woman:144% over, Men: 175% over recommended daily allowance. Excess protein= calcium excreted from bone=osteoporosis/brittle bone.

More Great Reasons:  Save Lot’s of Money By replacing meat, chicken and fish with vegetables and fruits, it is estimated to cut your food bill by an average of $4,000 a year.  Avoid toxic chemicals 95% of pesticide residue in the Western diet comes from meat, fish and dairy products.

Types: Total Vegetarians eat only plant food. They do not eat any animal foods, including fish, eggs, dairy products, and honey. Lacto-Vegetarians will include dairy products into their diet of plant food. Lacto-Ovo-Vegetarians eat both eggs and dairy products. Pesco-Vegetarians include fish into their diets. Pollo-Vegetarians eat poultry, such as chicken, turkey, and duck.

Vegetarian Vs Vegan Vegetarian eat only plant food. They do not eat any animal foods, including fish, eggs, dairy products, and honey. Vegan not only omit all animal products from their diets, but they also eliminate them from the rest of their life. Vegans use nothing from animals, such as leather, wool, and silk.

RESEARCH RED MEAT LINKED TO CANCER? “The association between consumption of red and processed meats and cancer, particularly colorectal cancer, is very consistent,” says Marji McCullough, PhD, a nutritional epidemiologist with the American Cancer Society. RED MEAT CAUSE HEART DISEASE? The answer is pretty clear. Some red meats are high in saturated fat, which raises blood cholesterol. High levels of LDL cholesterol increase the risk of heart disease.

Vegetarianism and Culture One of the main reasons for following a vegetarian diet is religion. BUDDHIST: Asia: many believe in reincarnation as animals, therefore do not eat them. However, some Buddhist do eat meat, believing that the real wrong is in killing the animal, rather than eating it Another reason: vegetables are in abundance, always.
