East Egg & West Egg

Introduction The areas based on Kings point and Sands point. These areas play a key part in the novels themes, reflecting transformation of “west egg”, showing prominent ideology differences between “west egg” and “east egg”.

East Egg Inherited money, aristocratic rich generation, older families. Tom and Daisy, key characters, large mansion demonstrates wealth. Housing – Palaces/Mansions, rich, large, expensive, old.

West Egg Symbolises ; – Freedom- non conformity to rich society – New beginnings, fresh start Newly acquired wealth, honest and hard working. West egg symbolises the decadence of the Roaring Twenties. Brooklyn and the Bronx became a haven for Jews Younger generation, modern taste home to prominent character Jay Gatsby.

Comparison West Egg West Egg is where the newly rich live, bought or built extravagant houses to show off their newly acquired wealth that they earned. This can be called “new money” In the case of Jay Gatsby who is considered new money, which would be regarded with suspicion, as is the case with Tom who suspects that Gatsby has made his overnight fortune through bootlegging. The people of West Egg or “Westerners” would be considered honest and hardworking people. East Egg East Egg is the location where the rich people who have inherited family money from previous generations meaning each family has prestige and rich predecessors. This type of money can be “old money” as it is passed through the generations and given to the new generations without effort or work. For example Daisy and Tom Buchanan live in East Egg because Tom's family is old money. The people of East Egg are considered “Easterners” and are stereotyped as cold, indifferent and not to be trusted.
