4. The Jazz Age and The Lost Generation refer to a period of time after World War I, beginning with the Roaring Twenties and ending with the beginning of the Great Depression.
The age refers to the popular music of the time of jazz. The age represents a shift in values in America, and a focus on living life to the fullest. The Jazz Age refers not only to the music of the time, however, also to the literature, and new developments in art, and a change in the social behavior of America.
This term is popularized by Hemingway who used it as one of two contrasting epigraphs for his novel, “The sun also rises”. In that volume Hemingway credits the phrase to Gertrude Stein, who was then his mentor and patron.

8. Summary (1)
The story begins with Nick Carraway’s reflections of his childhood and Jay Gatsby. Nick is the narrator of the story. In 1922, he moves to Great Neck (West Egg) in the East to work in a stock company. The right side of his house was the mansion of Gatsby. * * * One warm windy evening, Nick went to Sands Point (East Egg). There was Tom Buchanan’s mansion. He is the husband of Daisy and Nick’s secondary cousin. Also, Tom is Nick’s friend. Nick meets them and an unfamiliar young lady named, Jordan Baker. While they are eating together, Tom received a call from a woman.

9. Summary (2)
Because of this phone call, Tom and Daisy had a quarrel. As a result, Nick became aware of the mistress of Tom who was a sexual woman that lived in the city (New York). Daisy was tormented by Tom but she didn’t think about getting a divorce. Daisy wanted to act as a mediator between Nick and Baker and ask about the rumor regarding Nick’s engagement with some woman. After making things clear, Nick went back to West Egg. * * * While Nick was conscious of nature, he was not alone. That’s Gatsby. Nick didn’t talk to him. Because of that feeling that he wanted to be alone. When Nick looked up again, Gatsby was gone, he was alone again in complete darkness.
