1. In 1520 every church in Western Europe was Roman Catholic. 2. By 1540 new Christian denominations were worshipping in the Catholic churches. 3. Three events led to the changes: In 1302 the pope stated that salvation was not possible outside the Roman Catholic Church. Fondness of riches led to corruption in the church. Too many popes struggling for power.

4. Martin Luther was born in 1483 and died in He was from Northern Germany. He became an ordained priest, but lost faith in the pope. He strongly trusted the bible. 5. Due to Lutheranism being adopted in many German States political changes occurred. Peasants revolted, but did not have Luther’s support. The result was 100,000 peasants’ death.

6. Ulrich Zwingli’s denomination was created due to the fact that he wanted to be free of the papal control. He removed all religious images and had the Catholic Mass changed to a simple prayer service. 7. John Calvin’s denomination was based on predestination. Predestination was the belief that God had determined if you will go to heaven or hell before you are even born.

8. The Church of England’s break from the Catholic Church was due to Henry VIII’s desire to get a divorce from his wife. 9. Henry VIII didn’t change the services and sacraments because he believed in the teachings. 10. Radical changes occurred long after Henry VIII’s death. Two parts that spelled out the beliefs of the Church of England and adopted were: The Book of Common Prayer and Sacraments and the 42 articles of faith.

11. The Catholic Reformation came about over the years The Council of Trent’s final decision is that they would yield nothing to the religious rebels. 13. The council reaffirmed that in addition to the bible the pope and the church councils are also a valid source of a religious truth. 14. The war against protestant doctrines lasted 30 years.
