4 Martin Luther A GERMAN MONK, WHO IN 1517 PROTESTED THE CHURCH PRACTICE OF “SELLING INDULGENCES”. HE WROTE THE 95 THESES WHICH WOULD SPARK THE REFORMATION.

5 LUTHER’S OTHER KEY IDEAS SALVATION WAS BY FAITH ALONE CHURCH TEACHINGS SHOULD BE BASED ON THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE ONLY INDIVIDUALS COULD INTERPRET THE BIBLE FOR THEMSELVES

6 END RESULT FOR LUTHER HE WAS EXCOMMUNICATED BY THE POPE WAS DECLARED AN OUTLAW BY CHARLES V HIS SUPPORTERS SPLIT FROM THE CATHOLIC CHURCH & DEVELOPED LUTHERANSIM

7 King Henry VIII of England In 1534, he broke away from the Catholic Church. The Church refused to annul his marriage. This would result in England becoming Protestant. (The Anglican Church)

8 John Calvin A Protestant who believed in the Ideas of Luther, but also believed in the idea of predestination. “The idea that God has already determined who will be saved”

9 The Catholic Response -Excommunicated many of the Protestant leaders. -Banned Protestant writings. -Ruled at the Council of Trent that the Church was the sole authority to interpret the Bible

10 Results of the Reformation Led to further divisions in Christianity Ended Christian unity in Western Europe In some cases led to violence between Catholics & Protestants
