Writing Persuasive Essays Essential Question: How is a successful persuasive essay written?

What do we know about persuasive writing already? What is another word for persuade? Are you more likely to persuade someone by your own opinions or by facts?

Persuasive Essays To take a position FOR or AGAINST an issue To convince your readers to agree with you

Persuasive Essays Thesis statements:  State the topic of your essay.  Are not obvious to everyone.  Can be proven.  Often include the word “should” There are many stray cats and dogs on the streets. More people should consider adopting or fostering homeless cats and dogs.

Persuasive Essays Counterarguments:  Are your responses to the people who might disagree with your thesis (cons). Some might say they don’t have enough time or money to rescue an animal; however, cats are much less needy than dogs and are not as expensive.

Persuasive Essays Conclusions:  Summarize your main arguments.  Restate what you want your readers to believe.  Include a personal comment, question, or call to action.  Do not include any new information!
