Introduction Transition The statement that efficiently moves the reader into the next paragraph. Thesis A 2-part (prong) statement which you intend to prove in the next two body paragraphs. It must set up the argument you will make. The road map to your entire essay. It must set up response to essay prompt. See “Thesis” Handout. Background Info The information that you give to better your reader’s understanding about your subject. Give them detail that will let them understand what will follow in your essay. Hook Attract your reader’s attention. Make them want to read further into your essay. Attract them with something exciting. See “Hook” handout.

Body Paragraph # 1 Concluding Sentence Sum up all of the what you have just written. It reflects off of the Topic sentence.(1 Sentence) Commentary This sentence elaborates on why your CD is important or it informs your reader what it proves. You will comment on your CD. You must have two of these. Concrete Detail This is a fact that supports the Topic Sentence. (1 Sentence) Topic Sentence This must be an opinion statement that guides the paragraph. This is what you intend to prove by the end of the paragraph. Refer to prong number one.(1-2 sentences)

Counter- Argument Concluding Statement : Restate the TS and make your final statement irrefutably disproving the turn against. Turn Back/ Rebuttal Start the statement with words like but, yet, however, nevertheless, or still. Refute the opposing statement and show how it is mistaken. Acknowledge that the opposing point is plausible, but don’t overturn it by making a strong statement for it. Include a fact or a concrete detail has completely disproved the turn against. Turn Against The 1 st stage to re-affirming your argument. It must be an opinion of an opposing point of view. Do not make the opinion hard to challenge, or too easy. You want the reader to disagree with the opposing opinion in the next step. Topic Sentence Offer evidence and reasoning that supports your thesis.

Conclusion Exit Method Echo the introduction, challenge the reader, look into the future, or pose a question. See essay conclusions handout Synthesize Show them that your paper was meaningful or useful. How could you take the thesis to another level? Restate Restate your thesis in different words. Possibly discuss concrete details from body 1 and body 2. New Hook If you use the anecdotal hook, you can finish that hook here, or use a brand new hook.
