Welcome to TESL! “We all smile in the same language!”

Great Books for TESL Students “My Five Senses” by Aliki “I Love My Family” by Kathleen Beal “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” by Bill Martin Jr. “I Hate English” by Ellen Levine “Mung Mung” by Linda Sue Park “How My Parents Learned to Eat” by Ina Friedman

What is ESL (TESL)? ESL is an acronym standing for English as a Second Language. ESL classes are NOT bilingual in nature. A certified ESL teacher does NOT need to speak any of the many native languages that his/her students may speak. ESL instruction occurs IN ENGLISH using sheltered techniques, numerous hands-on activities, many pictures, body movements and gestures, and realia to teach English vocabulary. English vocabulary can be taught through thematic units which are content based. Instruction can occur in the mainstream classroom, or in the ESL classroom on a pull-out basis.

Some topics that we learn about in TESL are…… Plants and Animals Weather and Seasons Community Workers Maps and Graphs American Holidays and Customs Food and Nutrition Clothing Parts of the Body The Five Senses Rooms and Items in the House Persuasive Writing Friendly Letters Comparing Literature Transportation Families and Communities

How can YOU help your child learn English? Speak and read with your child in the language that you feel most comfortable and proficient in. Take your child to the local library to get their own library card. This will foster an interest in reading for enjoyment. Encourage your child to read to you in English and to discuss what they have read. Take your child on trips to interesting places such as zoos and museums. Arrange playdates for your children.

Here are some great websites that are perfect for second language learners!
