3  To attain the Proficient Level, students should participate in 3 to 5 years of continuous, sequential proficiency-oriented language instruction. To attain the Distinguished Level, students should participate in a minimum of 5 to 7 years of continuous, sequential proficiency-oriented language instruction. There are several factors that affect the rate at which an individual student will attain these levels:  the age, motivation, and ability level of the student.  the amount of time and effort put forth by the student to study, practice, and actually use the language.  the amount of instruction over a period of time (without skipping semesters or years).  the nature and quality of the instruction.  the level of support beyond the classroom of parents and guardians.

4  Participate actively in small and large group oral language practice.  Study, practice, and learn new words and phrases with other students in your language.  Use what you have learned to communicate with your teacher and classmates orally and in writing (journals, texts, email, etc.).

5  Provide frequent opportunities for students to hear and communicate in the second language.  Infuse authentic cultural information into second language instruction.  Teach and assess vocabulary, grammar, and skills in meaningful and relevant ways.

6  Make sure your child is in a sequential language program for at least 3 to 5 years to attain the Proficient Level and 4 to 7 years to attain the Distinguished Level.  Encourage your child to progress to higher levels of oral proficiency.  Do not allow your child to fall behind. Be sure they are practicing daily.

7  Say at least 8 colors  Say numbers-- in order, out of order  0 – 15  0 – 100  0 – 1000 +  Tell time-- On the hour and half hour  Quarter to and past, minutes to –and past the hour  Say the alphabet  Use the alphabet to spell words  Say the days of the week  Say the months of the year  Say the complete date  State name, age, and birthday  Name the seasons of the year  Say the weather  Name at least 10 animals

9 Building upon the Novice Level topics, students must create original sentences, ask questions, give directions, and provide simple descriptions related to the following topics:  Greet adults and friends and ask how they are.  State name, age and birthday. Ask about someone else.  Tell about someone else.  Tell where you go to school, your grade, tell where you live, address, your phone number. Ask about your friend(s).  Describe yourself –what you look like, your personality, state your nationality, your daily routine.  State your favorite foods and those you do not like.  State your favorite activities, hobbies, sports, pets, possessions and those you do not like. Ask a classmate what he/she likes.  Describe your favorite activities in school and after school (time, place, with whom, when, etc.).  Name ten family members.  Give the names, age of family members and state their relationship to you. Ask about your friend’s family.

Ask about your friend’s family.  Name ten rooms in the house.  Name ten furniture items in a house.  Give directions for finding a room or items in a room.  Describe your favorite room and tell what you do there.  Describe some furniture items in your house (size, color, number)  Name ten body parts.  Tell how you feel (tired, hungry, thirsty, sick, feverish, hurt) and what you need (food, medical attention). Ask about your friend’s symptoms.  Describe medical needs to a doctor or school nurse. Ask what you should do.  Name at least ten buildings in the neighborhood or community.  Name at least six modes of transportation.  Buy survival non-food items in various community businesses.  Give directions from school to a familiar place in the community.  Give directions—from classroom to another room, gym, office.

11  Ask for directions to a place in your community.  Name at least fifteen foods.  Name at least seven drinks.  Buy basic food items at a market. Ask about prices and quantity.  Order a variety of foods and drinks in a restaurant related specific meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, party).  Name at least 10 articles of clothing.  Describe what you wear--include different colors, different seasonal clothes and the weather.  Ask a classmate about an item of clothing that they are wearing, how much it costs, and where they buy their clothes.  Get people to restate things differently, more slowly, simply.  Get a hotel room (price, no. of beds, shower, TV, availability)  Get transportation to a certain place (taxi, train ticket, bus ticket, etc.)  Talk about information on simple tables, charts, ads  Tell time (including 24-hour clock).  Convert foreign / US currency, make change, cash a check.  Buy stamps, postcards, make inquiries about cost, packages or telegrams.  Issue a simple invitation; make a reservation or an appointment.  Respond to simple questions at customs.  Use common telephone phrases
