1 ESL Program at LPS ESL program at Lambertville Public School is a program based on the latest theories in second language acquisition. It is designed to build students’ communicative skills in all four language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The purpose of the program is to ensure linguistic growth and success of the English language learners.

2 The ESL program at Lambertville Public school is built around the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs). ELLs at LPS are fully integrated in the classroom activities. They also are offered a pull-out program designed to foster their academic language proficiency. Each student receives at least 30 min. of ESL lesson daily. The program is based on World- Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) Standards

3 Terms the ESL Teachers Use ELLs - English Language Learners ESL -English as a Second Language EOL -English as Other Language WIDA- World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment ACCESS for ELLs (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners) W-APT - WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test

6 What is academic language? Fun activity (I learned about this activity during the ESL Curriculum Building workshop, organized by NJBE/NJTESOL ) Turn to a partner. Decide who will be A and who will be B. Start with person A and tell person B why you like or dislike oranges Start with person B and describe an orange to person A as if you were a mathematician. Start with person A and describe an orange to person B as if you were a scientist. Start with person B and describe an orange to person A as if you were a historian/economist.

7 ELLs in the ESL classroom do not describe oranges every day but they learn the vocabulary, language forms and language functions needed for successful participation in all the classroom activities during the school day.

8 Homeroom and ESL Teachers Cooperation Even though ESL students use separate materials, ESL Program follows closely the curriculum of the students’ homerooms. Homeroom teachers share their lesson plans with the ESL teacher so the vocabulary, language forms and functions taught in the ESL classroom coincide with those taught in the homerooms.

In addition to their exposure to Smart Board in their classroom, ELLs work in small groups. Each of them has access to a laptop or desktop in the ESL room. They are quite adept at using multiple kinds of educational software and web-based programs.

Students enjoy making them. It builds their self esteem and courage. E-portfolios also give parents an access to their children performance.
