1 Spring What happens in Spring?
How can you help? Here are the basic skills to focus on this term; Spring Term 1 Nursery Mrs Marshall and Mrs Johnstone Miss Bardill, Miss Gregory and Mr Clifton Reading – Spring Term Sit and listen to a story Show interest in books and turn pages Know at least 5 nursery rhymes Know that illustrations carry meaning Talk about stories and show an interest in books Recognise own name, Handle books correctly and know print is read left to right and top to bottom Read bedtime stories with your child and talk about what might happen next. Talk about the pictures in books. Visit the Library and share a wide range of books together. Play games like ‘I Spy…’ to encourage children to hear the sounds in words. Spring What happens in Spring? Our Weekly Questions Week 1: What happens in Springtime? What is Spring weather like? Week 2: What is World Book Day What is your favourite book? Week 3: What signs of spring can we see around nursery? What is Red Nose Day? Week 4: Can you name the parts of a flower? What is your favourite flower? Week 5: What are Spring animals? Week 6: What is the Easter Story? Why do some people celebrate Easter? Writing –Spring Term Listening and responding to simple instructions. Interest in making marks. Begins to use more control in fine motor activities e.g. scissors, pouring etc. Hears and says initial sounds in words. Purposeful mark making. Writes own first name. Encourage your child to write colour and draw at home. Encourage speaking and listening skills – talk about your day and his/her day. Maths – Spring Term Use some number names & number language spontaneously Begin to represent numbers using fingers, marks on paper or pictures Recite numbers in order to 10 Recognise numbers to 5 1:1 correspondence to count up to 4 objects Find the total number of items in 2 groups by counting all of them Understand & use some positional language such as in front, behind, on top… Encourage your child to use numbers in everyday situations e.g. number of plates needed for dinner, counting stairs to bed, looking for numbers on buses/doors etc

Through these books and our wider curriculum we will encourage the children to think about the different seasons and the signs of Spring.
