Here are the basic skills to focus on this term;

Sit and listen to a story
Show interest in books and turn pages
Know at least 5 nursery rhymes
Know that illustrations carry meaning
Talk about stories and show an interest in books
Recognise own name,
Handle books correctly and know print is read left to right and top to bottom
Read bedtime stories with your child and talk about what might happen next. Talk about the pictures in books. Visit the Library and share a wide range of books together. Play games like ‘I Spy…’ to encourage children to hear the sounds in words.

Writing –Spring Term
Listening and responding to simple instructions.
Interest in making marks.
Begins to use more control in fine motor activities e.g. scissors, pouring etc.
Hears and says initial sounds in words.
Purposeful mark making.
Writes own first name.
Encourage your child to write colour and draw at home. Encourage speaking and listening skills – talk about your day and his/her day.
Maths – Spring Term
Use some number names & number language spontaneously
Begin to represent numbers using fingers, marks on paper or pictures
Recite numbers in order to 10
Recognise numbers to 5
1:1 correspondence to count up to 4 objects
Find the total number of items in 2 groups by counting all of them
Understand & use some positional language such as in front, behind, on top…
Encourage your child to use numbers in everyday situations e.g. number of plates needed for dinner, counting stairs to bed, looking for numbers on buses/doors etc
