Athletic Injuries

Sprain DEFINITION – Stretching of a joint or ligament SYMPTOMS – Sever pain, Swelling, Difficulty moving TREATMENT – R.I.C.E.

Dislocation DEFINITION – End of a bone is forced out of a joint SYMPTOMS – Extreme pain in the joint TREATMENT – Keep very still. Seek medical help.

Bruise DEFINITION – Contusion – Injury to tissue under the skin SYMPTOMS – Black & Blue, Tender, Discoloration TREATMENT – Apply Ice

Strain DEFINITION – Overworked Muscle SYMPTOMS – Soreness from overexertion TREATMENT – Rest, Apply Heat

Pulled Muscle DEFINITION – Muscle is separated or torn from its point of attachment SYMPTOMS – Severe Pain TREATMENT – Apply Ice, Seek Medical Attention

Muscle Cramp DEFINITION – Muscle contracts tightly and doesn’t relax SYMPTOMS – Tightening pain in a specific muscle TREATMENT – Massage, Apply Heat

Hernia DEFINITION – Rupture, Tear, or Weak Area in your Abdomen SYMPTOMS – Severe Pain, Organ Protrusion TREATMENT – Rest, Possibly Surgery

Heat Exhaustion DEFINITION – Body becomes overheated due to loss of large amounts of water SYMPTOMS – Pale, moist skin, dizziness TREATMENT – Move to a cool place, lie down, lower head

Heat Stroke DEFINITION – Prolonged exposure to extreme heat and sunlight SYMPTOMS – Dry, hot skin, rapid pulse, difficulty breathing TREATMENT – Move to a cool place, loosen clothing, call ambulance

Frostbite DEFINITION – Tissue freeze due to prolonged exposure to extreme freezing temperatures SYMPTOMS – Numbness in extremities (nose, chin, cheeks fingers toes) TREATMENT – Warm gradually, watch for shock
