Assimilation Adapting/fitting in/becoming a part of a new culture or situation. Italians were known for taking any job they could get. They were hardworkers and manual laborers and never accepted charity offerings.

“Birds of Passage” Millions of immigrants who arrived in the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries had intentions of returning to their villages in The Old World. They came to America to earn enough money to return home and buy new land to make up for what they lost.

Descendant From an ancestor. Related to a person or group who lived in the past

Enclaves Communities/cliques Italians settled into certain neighborhoods depending on their exact place of origin. For example: Neapolitans and Sicilians settled in different parts of New York while northern Italians settled in California. This is how “Little Italy’s” began to form

Immigrant An Immigrant is a person who comes to one country from another with intentions of living there permanently.

“L’isola delle Lacrime” “The Island of Tears” was what Italians coming to America coined as the name for Ellis Island. They were an impoverished group of people with hardly any belongings. Many were lucky to have their families with them.

La Famiglia La Famiglia or “the family” was the core of Italian immigrant life and often seen as the root of survival. As Italians settled in America certain aspects of their lives began to change. language customs/traditions

Migratory Laborer Workers who had to travel to find jobs.

I Padroni They were men who exploitatively employed or found work for Italian immigrants in America. He also acted as a neighborhood banker, loan office, travel agent, interpreter, and legal counselor.
