Activator  1. What was your favorite storybook as a child?  2. What made it good?  3. How will you bring the “Rise of the U.S. to a World Power” to life for young people and help them to be critical thinkers?  4. Which key terms do you still need information on?

Agenda  Activator, agenda, and objective (10 minutes)  Jigsaw activity (30-45 minutes)  Comprehension check – key terms  U.S. role in the world (15 minutes)  Working in pairs on the storybook (30-45 minutes)  Exit ticket and homework (5-10 minutes)

Objective  All students will…  Teach each other the information they need for their storybooks.  Evaluate the U.S. role in the world.  – Students describe the Spanish American War and the U.S. expansion in the South Pacific.  – Students discuss America’s role in the Panama Revolution and the building of the Panama Canal.  – Students list the purpose, cause, and effects of the Open Door Policy.

Teaching Each Other: Jigsaw Activity  Form groups by section: everyone who did section 1 together; everyone who did section 2 together; everyone who did section 3 together; everyone who did section 4 together.  Now I will form you into “super-groups” made up of one person from each expert group.  In your super-groups, teach each other your section.  By the end you need good notes on all 4 sections!

Comprehension Check: Write one sentence next to each of these terms  Imperialism  Nationalism  Economic Interests  Spanish American War  USS Maine  Theodore Roosevelt  Treaty of Paris  Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Samoa (Pacific)  Open Door Policy  Panama Canal  Big Stick Diplomacy  Dollar Diplomacy  Moral Diplomacy  Anti-Imperialists

United States: Leader or Bully in the World?  Make a T chart in your notebooks and write “leader” on one side and “bully” on the other.  What events should go under leader? Why?  What events should go under bully? Why?  What would you want your children to learn about U.S. involvement in other countries since the Spanish American War in 1898?

Independent Pair-Work  Take the time to complete the graphic organizer and work on a draft of your storybook.  The draft is due Monday.  The only person you should be talking to is your partner.  Raise your hand if you have questions and I will come around.

U.S. Policy in Puerto Rico and Cuba Main Idea: After the Spanish-American War, Puerto Rico remained under direct U.S. rule and Puerto Ricans were given some citizenship rights. The United States also continued to have influence in Cuban government. Roosevelt Pursues “Big Stick” Diplomacy Main Idea: Theodore Roosevelt thought it was important to take a strong stand in international affairs, and wanted the United States to act as “police” for all of Latin America. Wilson Pursues Moral Diplomacy Main Idea: When Wilson was elected President, he criticized the imperialist actions of his predecessors. However, under his term the United States continued to intervene in Mexico and Latin American affairs.

Homework: Write this in your agendas  All writing for storybook done by Monday 10/27.  Draft of storybook due at the start of class.
