Human Body Systems Online Course By: Teleatha Shepherd

Course Overview This course was designed as a hybrid course. Students will complete online and in class assignments. It is a 5 week course that takes students through 4 human body systems including the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and excretory system. Each week focuses on one system with the final week being a review and wrap up week ending in the final assessment.

Objective 1 Students will be able to identify the individual parts and function of the circulatory system.

Activities for Objective 1 Students complete background reading and research on the circulatory system. Begin a graphic organizer using Kidspiration. Watch a short video clip, read and online article and take a quiz. Create a life size body drawing including the organs in the circulatory system. Begin final PowerPoint presentation creating slide for the circulatory system.

Objective 2 Students will be able to identify the parts and function of the respiratory system.

Activities for Objective 2 Read and complete research for the respiratory system. Add to Kidspiration graphic organizer Complete an in class lab measuring lung capacity. View online video clip, read online articles and take online quiz on the respiratory system. Add respiratory slides to power point.

Objective 3 Students will be able to identify the parts and function of the digestive system.

Activities for Objective 3 Read and research the digestive system. Add to graphic organizer in Kidspiration Complete in class Tootsie Roll Activity. Watch online video and complete sequencing chart. Creative writing activity. Add to final power point.

Objective 4 Students will be able to identify the parts and function of the excretory system.

Activities for Objective 4 Read and research on the excretory system. Add to graphic organizer in Kidspiration. Complete lab activity sorting wastes from good. Read online article on kidney disease and respond to questions. Add to power point for excretory system.

Objective 5 Students will review body systems studied and demonstrate knowledge gained throughout the unit by presenting power points and completing a final cumulative assessment.

Activities for Objective 5 View online video covering all body systems. Play body systems game. Take a review quiz on body systems Take final body systems assessment.

Outcomes of trial I had a test group of 5 students try the website. They did not complete all the activities because I plan on launching this whole group during out next unit in science. I wanted these students to try out the site and work out the kinks before the whole group launch.

The Good Students were very engaged Students enjoyed the interactive websites. Students enjoyed the online video clips and quizzes. Students seemed to understand the activities with little help.

The Bad Technology issues Direction clarification Student suggestions for improvement on the design. Never taken an online course before. Changes for the future

Final Thoughts Even with the problems experienced during the trial I am excited to launch the site whole group and see all the students get chance to experience the site and learning online.
