Introduction Learning disabilities affect so many people in many different ways. In fact this is one of the disabilities that you may not even realize in a particular person due to the fact that they may only struggle in one specific area. However, there are also people who are affected in multiple ways. Throughout this web quest you will learn more about some of the ways that people are affected, get to know what it feels like to have a learning disability and even learn how people with learning disabilities have adapted to be more successful. The Task Follow the links and do the activities to help you learn about different aspects of what it means to have a Learning Disability. Begin Quest

What is a learning disability? Look up the definition herehere Research more information about learning disabilities –Check out the website or by going to Encarta online Encarta online

The 4 Ds:The Most Common Learning Disabilities Dyslexia Dysgraphia Dysnomia Dyscalculia Find out what the prefix of all of these words mean and what each of the root words mean.

Dyslexia Read the following passage and then group up with 1 or 2 others and discuss the questions after the reading.passage Use this website to learn more about this disability and answer the following questions.website *What is it? *What symptoms do these people exhibit? *How can these people be assisted?

Dysgraphia What hand do you normally write with? That is your dominant hand. Now use your non-dominant hand (the hand you don’t normally write with) to write your name. Then write the following sentence with that hand as well. Bumpy beans don’t jump high. Just what is Dysgraphia? Find out here.here While there, focus on the causes of this disability. List 5 interesting strategies that people with this disability use to overcome the barriers from this disability.

Disnomia Dysnomia is a marked difficulty in remembering names or recalling appropriate words in a discussion. This problem may be particularly prominent if the person is asked to answer a question to which he/she must supply an immediate answer. However, when the person speaks spontaneously, without prompting, his/her speech appears perfectly normal. See what its like to have this disability

You have 10 seconds to remember everything on this page. Can you do it?

What do you remember? How many objects does your list contain? Why was this so difficult?

Dyscalculia Learn about some of the things people with dyscalculia struggle withthings Anything that you would like to add? Click here for more information about dyscalculia.Click here Try to solve the following problems

Try these! 1)3+14= 2)21+32= 3)104+62= 4)332+85= 5)44+21=

Check your answers! 1)3+14= 22 2)21+32=103 3)104+62=221 4)332+85=1022 5)44+21=120 You may be thinking that the problems you did were very easy. How do your answers compare? It turns out that these equations are not using our traditional Base 10 system where you carry when you get to 10. Rather it is based on a base 5 system, which means that place values can not be higher than 5 for your answers. In that sense 5 would be equivalent 10 because you are able to regroup the numbers. Now that you know this, create 3 problems using base 5 to give to a friend These tiles show 124 in base 5

In the Movies Watch scene ___from the movie I am Sam. What struggles does Sam deal with? What ways does he try to overcome his disabilities?

Angie’s stories are written very well and have even received honorable mentions in competitions that her stories have been entered in. Does Angie have a learning disability?learning disability

Ben Ben is a 2 nd grader this year. He has a perfect score for all of his math work for the year, but reading is a different story. He is still struggling to learn his alphabet and how each letter sounds. Ben has only been in this country for 4 months after moving here from Spain. When he is reading aloud he has to pause frequently because it he uses wrong words throughout the reading as well as mispronounces the words. Does Ben have a learning disability?learning disability

However, he does hold his pencil with his hand so that his fist is a bit clinched. Chris talks out of turn frequently and doesn’t always understand sarcasm and jokes that he is told.
