Presentation transcript:

Review of English Grammar The subject of a sentence tells who is doing the action. Often you use people’s names as the subject: Ben plays sports. Chester runs. Christy watches the TV. Becky uses the computer.

Review, con’t Instead of constantly repeating a person’s name as the subject, we also use subject pronouns. These pronouns replace the person’s name. Example: Ben plays sports. Ben likes to play sports. Ben is sports-minded. Ben is daring. Ben plays sports. He likes to play sports. He is sports- minded. He is daring.

The English Subject Pronouns

Spanish Subject Pronouns Just like English, Spanish also uses subject pronouns. Also, you can also chart these pronouns just like we saw with the English pronouns.

2 nd Person 3rd Person

Notes Tú, usted, ustedes, and vosotros (as) all mean you. Tú is used with friends, family, people your age or younger, and anyone you know on a first name basis. Usted (Ud.) is used with adults you address as Mr./Mrs./Miss or people you don’ t know. Outside of Spain, use ustedes (Uds.) when talking to two or more people regardless of age or rank. In Spain, use vosotros (as) when talking to two or more people with whom you would use Tú. Use Uds. When talking to two or more people with whom you would use Ud.

Notes, con’t Regarding plural subject pronouns, if the group you are talking about is made up of males only or males and females together, you use nosotros, vosotros, and ellos. If the group is female only, use nosotras, vosotras, ellas.

Notes, con’t Just like in English, you can combine a subject pronoun with a name to form a subject Alejandro y yo = nosotros Carlos y ella = ellos Pepe y tú = vosotros/Uds. Lola y ella = ellas
