Subject pronouns Capítulo 2A notes #1

What is a subject?  The subject of a sentence tells who is doing the action.  We often use people’s names as the subject.  Ex: Sara es una amiga buena  Ex: Carlos estudia el arte

What is a subject pronoun?  Simply put, a subject pronoun replaces someone’s name.  For example: If I am talking about Sara, I can use “she” instead of repeating her name over and over again. Ex: Sara is a good student. She studies a lot. (Sara es una estudiante buena. Ella estudia mucho.)

Subject pronouns Singular (only one) Plural (more than one) 1 st person Yo=INosotros=weNosotras=we 2 nd person Tú=youUsted(ud.)=you Ustedes (uds.) =you all Vosotros/as= You all 3 rd person Él=heElla=sheEllos=theyEllas=they

Tú, usted, and ustedes  Tú, usted, and ustedes all mean “you”.  Use “Tú” with family, friends, people your age or younger, and anyone you call by his or her first name  Use “usted” with adults you address with a title, such as señor, señora, or profesora.  In Latin America, use “ustedes” when speaking to two or more people, regardless of age. “ustedes” is abbreviated as “uds.”

vosotros  In Spain, use “vosotros/as” when speaking to two or more people you call “tú” individally.  *You will not have to know the “vosotros” form for test or quizzes

Gender(masculine and feminine)  If a group is made up of males only or of both males and females together, use the masculine forms: nosotros, vosotros, ellos.  If a group is all females, use the feminine forms nosotras, vosotras, ellas

Combining names and pronouns  You can combine a subject pronoun and a name to form a subject.  Sara y yo=nosotrosPepe y tú=ustedes  Pepe y ella=ellosLola y ella=ellas
