In our group we have chosen to design a street of people who are doing everything they can to save water and energy. We have found out lots of easy ways to save water and energy. These tips and tricks will be throughout the PowerPoint and feel free to use some of these tips yourself.

Welcome to Savers’ Place. We all work together as a community to save energy and water. We also do lots of things in our homes. We are trying to live in a sustainable community so that when water and energy begin to run low we will still live a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. Today we will be showing you the Robinson’s family home. It is very economically friendly and very energy efficient. The family members are also eco-friendly by the way they live. We will also show you how the community can co-operate together to decrease their energy and water usage. In our street we have dedicated a small piece of land for our Community Room. This room is for the people of Savers’ Place to use and share.

Why we have solar panels on our roofs… We use solar panels to heat our water, so it no longer takes any electricity to heat. By not using electricity to heat our water, we can use that energy on other things. Heating our water no longer costs us lots of money because the energy is from the sun. We are no longer buying our energy from the national grid. It is a renewable source of energy and will not run out like other energy sources such as coal and gas.

How do solar panels heat water? A solar hot water heater uses energy from the sun to heat water. The heater does this by heating a large body of water and storing it for later. Then as the water begins to get cold it is taken through the tubes back to the solar hot water heater, to be reheated. This cycle of heating continues throughout the day and at night it stops then continues again at sunrise. The black tubes must be thin enough to let the heat go straight into the water, but thick enough not to bend and deform in the heat.

We have barbeque dinners as a street during the summer and regularly share meals with other members of the street. After dinner we will watch television together. We also have regular movie nights for the children. Sharing a meal means that less appliances are being used for cooking. Watching television together means that less televisions are in use. In both of these situations energy in being saved.

The community room is where we store things that we share or use together. We store our solar lawnmowers, a shared barbeque, ovens, microwaves and a data projector in this room. By sharing our solar lawnmowers it saves energy by not using oil as it is using renewable energy from the sun. It also means it has been used to its full extent so when it eventually needs to be replaced we know that it has been used well. The barbeque is used for community gatherings so only one source of energy is being used to cook a meal. The ovens and microwaves are used by everybody in the community because the energy from the solar panels powers the appliances and means they are not using electricity. The data projector projects onto a screen outside and the community will gather round to watch movies together instead of using different televisions sets in their own homes watching similar things.

Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth Have short showers (5-7 mins) Maybe even buy a showerguard. The showerguard turns off the water after a certain amount of time making your shower shorter. Have eco-bulbs Turn off lights when nobody is in the room. Having your own vegetable garden. Compost and recycling. Only drive a car with 2 or more people. Put a brick or bag of water in your toilet tank.
