4. Lighting When in design, attempt to use natural lighting. In interior rooms, solar tubes can be installed. Use energy efficient lighting fixtures and correct placement.

5. Radiant Floor Heating Can be used in sync with solar water heaters. Heat the floor from coils with water in them.

6. Night Flushing  Design the structure with an exhaust fan.  When activated, hot air is removed from the house to let cool air in.  Climate must have cooler nights.

7. Geothermal  Easy way to heat your home by using underground coils to collect heat from the earth or water. Only available in certain regions.

8. Windows and Doors  Pick windows and doors that will meet the insulation needs of your project.  Always use double or triple pane windows depending on the climate.  Minimize east and west facing windows to reduce heat gain in hotter climates.

9. Windows  When placing windows, add an awning or overhang over the window to add shade when the sun is at its highest.

10. Materials  Using materials local to the region reduce shipping costs and gas consumption.

11. Materials  When sizing rooms, keep in mind the lengths that materials come in so you can reduce waste by using those dimensions  EX: If a 2x4 comes in lengths of 10’, make room sizes accordingly.

12. Appliances  When designing, try to pick appliances with the “Energy Star” certification.
