Who are we? We are HSP (Health Sciences Partnership) Stuart D. Le – First Year Medical Student (Slated to graduate from UCLA DGSOM in 2012) Sumeet Wadhwani – Undergraduate Student (Slated to earn a bachelors from UCR) Why are we here? To help you guys get into college To get you guys interested in health care To get you guys TO health care careers! Sorry, but this presentation is going to be a bit of a bore, but it’s good for you all. The next one will be much less business!

"A-G” Subject Requirement for the UC and CSU a.HISTORY: Two years required -- one year of United States history and one year of World History, Culture, and Geography; one semester of American Government or Civics may be substituted. b.ENGLISH: Four years of college- preparatory English - composition and literature. Not more than two semesters of ninth-grade English will be accepted for this requirement. Only two semesters of English Language Development (ELD) will be accepted.

"A-G” Subject Requirement c. MATHEMATICS: Three years of mathematics - elementary algebra (Algebra 1 or Algebra 1A and Algebra 1B), geometry, and intermediate algebra (Algebra 2). Four years are recommended. d. LABORATORY SCIENCE: Two years, including fundamental knowledge in at least two of these three areas: biology, chemistry, and physics (three years recommended)

"A-G” Subject Requirement e. FOREIGN LANGUAGE: Two years of one foreign language; three years are recommended f. VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS: Includes one year of any of the approved courses in dance, drama, music, and visual arts.

"A-G” Subject Requirement g. COLLEGE PREPARATORY ELECTIVES: One years in addition to those courses required in "A through F" above, to be chosen from at least one of the following subject areas: history, English, advanced mathematics, laboratory science, foreign language, social science, and fine arts. (NOTE: Students are urged to consult their school counselor in the selection of course work to fulfill this requirement). TI says: You can do whatever you liiiiiiiike. Yeaaah.

Testing Requirement for UC and CSU CSU Exam Requirements SAT or ACT UC Exam Requirements SAT Reasoning Test or ACT with Writing SAT Subject Tests (2 different subject tests, not Math I)

Other Colleges Doesn’t have to be the UC or CSU Colleges outside of the California Public System have very similar requirements no matter where you want to go. Here are some examples…

Other Colleges Princeton Admission Requirements: Four years of English Four years of math Four years of the same foreign language At least two years of a lab science At least two years of history Art, music, and a second foreign language are recommended The SAT, two SAT IIs, and the ACT can be substituted for the SAT if all of applicant's other schools require the ACT

Other Colleges Vanderbilt Admission Requirements: Four years of English Two years of Algebra 1 year of plane Geometry Two years of the same foreign language Two years of science Two years of a social science Additional units in the above are recommended.

Now that you’re bored… Let’s talk about things you can actually use! Personal Statement Advice Liberal Arts Colleges vs. University Where to live Financial Aid Scholarships And What If Things Don’t Go As Planned

Personal Statements When applying to any college you have to turn in an application ALONG with essays Grades Activities General Information -So why write about what they’re already going to know? -This is a very common mistake!

Personal Statements When posed with a question such as, “What unique traits will you bring to _________ University?” Do not list what is already in your application! The Personal Statement is about YOU Mention an activity, but what does it mean to YOU Mention what you’ve done in school, but what does it mean to YOU Views on education have changed so much, that it is not primarily what your grades are or test scores are A big part of it is what kind of person YOU are

Personal Statements One more thing….. Please, Please, get your stuff proof read by another person. So much time to do the statement  So why have errors? Your parents, teachers, advisors should be more than willing to go over your statements with you.

Just because it quacks like a University… Liberal Arts Colleges vs. University Two types of education for a bachelors Liberal Arts Smaller (Much more intimate) Take what you want to take Often more expensive Still feels like you’re in High School (VERY SMALL CLASSES) University Larger Major system Cheaper Able to get the stereotypical “college” experience Odds are you’ll find something that interest you

Housing It is always best to get your application in ON TIME! Why?  Housing Opportunities! Commute Driving from home every morning Bad if School is >30 mins away (SoCal Traffic) Rent and Meals are “free” Appt Cheaper than the Dorms Gotta feed yourself though Short commute to campus

Housing Dorms The best way to go! Close to campus Food from residence halls Easy to meet friends that you’ll probably hang out with a lot No parental supervision

Financial Aid Many schools provide financial aid but… YOU MUST SUBMIT YOUR FAFSA! The earlier this is done, the better If you are late, you will lose the money that you could have had to pay for college Call your school of interest often to check if everything is in order (I.e housing and FA)

Scholarships There is a ton of money out there But….. I have been informed that you have been educated on this Still the best way to look for a little extra money Keep in mind, some scholarships will be deducted from your financial aid (that you submitted your FAFSA on time for RIGHT!?!??!?).

Plan B

Thanks! Thanks for having us here! I promise the next time will be a lot more fun PBL’s/Case Studies Medicine Any questions?
