Pubs in London

The word „pub“ is short for „the public house“. It is a house opened for everybody to meet, drink, and chat. Pubs need a license to sell alcoholic drinks. If they sell alcohol to people under 18, they may lose it. Then they have to close. Pubs sell wine, soft drinks, and different types of beer. Red beer is called pizza or ale. The cold blonde beer is called „lager“. The thick black beer is called „stout“. It is usually called by its brand name: „Guinness“. The beer is served in half-pints or pints.

A pint is a little more than half a liter. A pub is an ideal place to relax and chat. Some people prefer to stand at the bar. Drinks cost exactly the same whether you stand or sit. Most pubs have a dining area. There you can eat traditional British dishes. You can eat fish and chips or sausages and mash. You can also eat continental food such as lasagne. Prices are reasonable: Usually between five pounds and ten pounds. Nearly all pubs serve food of some kind.

„Fish and chips“ is a famous British dish. It is made of fresh fish and home-made potatoes. It is a little bit heavy for some people. Smoking is prohibited in pubs. It was prohibited in July You have to go outside if you want to smoke.
