 I can explain how heredity and environment affect personality development  I can define self-concept  I can list suggestions for improving self- esteem

What is a good personality and how do I know if I have one? What aspects of your personality would you like to change? Why? What are your good qualities? How can thinking about these qualities give your self- esteem a boost?

 Personality: combination of traits that makes you the person you are  You are UNIQUE!!! ONE OF A KIND!!!  Traits: qualities that make you different from everyone else  Personality develops by:  Heredity: passing of traits from one generation family to the next

AgreeableEasygoingLazy AloofExcitableLoyal BashfulFaithfulMature CarefulFlightyMoody CheerfulFriendlyResponsible ConfidentGenerousSilly CooperativeGrumpySincere CriticalHappyUnderstanding DelightfulKindLoyal Which of these best describe you?

 Good Looks or a good personality?  What are your best personality traits?  What aspects of your personality would you like to change? Why?

 Inherited traits: traits received from parents and ancestors  Hair & eye color, skin, height, body build, facial features, physical & mental capabilities  Environment: all of your surroundings  (Family, home, friends, school, classmates, teachers, coaches, community) Birth order, size of family  Acquired traits: not inherited qualities  (Likes, dislikes, goals, interests, attitudes, abilities, speech, mannerism)  Siblings may have completely different personality traits

 Family environment shapes your personality the most  Personality traits acquired from family members are learned by imitation  Ex. Parent becomes angry easily, child may pick up that trait

 As child gets older, family not as big an influence, instead television, internet, other media more important  School & Friends play a bigger role  Relationships with friends affect acquired traits, likes and dislikes may become similar to friends

 Community affects acquired traits  Ex. May join scout group, go on camping trips which affect feelings about nature, scout leader helps you develop leadership traits  Sports teams, church choirs, local clubs, etc.

 You can change personal traits but it can be hard to do  You are in control of your behavior & actions  When trying to change, select one thing  Plan, set a realistic goal, and reward yourself when you achieve it  You might fall back into old habits, but if it’s important for you to change, you will!

 Pg. 19

 Self- Concept: way you see yourself  The picture of yourself impacts your decisions & actions  Self-Esteem: how you feel about yourself  Good SE accept things that can’t be changed, don’t let things get them down, help others feel good about themselves  Self-Confidence: courage to deal with people & events in a positive way  Attitudes: feelings & opinions about people, things, & events

 Don’t feel good about yourself  Worry about shortcomings & failures  Dwell on past mistakes  Afraid to try new things  Putting themselves down  Feel & act as if they are worthless

 Each new achievement will increase your self- esteem  Self-Confidence will grow as well  New experience can be frightening, more confidence, less fear

 Accept yourself as you are  You may only be comparing their strengths with your weaknesses  This is not fair & won’t help your self esteem  Remarks such as “She can’t act at all. I could have done a much better job.” Make the lead person look really good & the other person jealous  There will always be someone better, just try your best & avoid comparing yourself with others

Learn to accept praise Focus on your strengths Accept yourself as you are Learn from your mistakes Use your strengths to help others Take responsibility for your own life

Debates on Human Cloning  If you could clone yourself, would you?  Why?  Would your clone have the same personality as you? Why? What factors affect your personality?
