Tips for Teaching HS I-TV Classes March 7, 2011

Practical Tips Call schools to introduce yourself to principal and facilitator Request a facilitator be in the room at the remote site at all times Make friends with your facilitator Setup method of moving materials: , USPS, Fax

Practical Tips Look into the camera on the back wall Lecture – from an outline on document camera – by writing on plain paper on the document camera – using PowerPoint (requires computer) But show teacher’s face 75% of time— alternate between lecture and face

Practical Tips cont. Be natural, smile, relax Zoom in on the teacher—students need to see facial expression Vary your facial expression and tone Speak slowly and clearly

Practical Tips cont. For inclusion call on all students all the time Be organized – mail or fax work to facilitators a week or so ahead – provide students with grades in a timely manner Use only a few pieces of equipment at first

Practical Tips cont. Mention current events that affect local and remote schools Mute system when local student comes to desk for help—share info later Encourage students and facilitators to report any technical problems they are having

Practical Tips cont. Meet with students at ballgames or other planned activities Discipline problems? Call the facilitator and/or principal immediately

Logistics of I-TV Teaching Broadcasting to only one school is a point-to- point Broadcasting to two or more schools is a multipoint Multipoint classes are connected by Three Rivers College

Logistics of I-TV Teaching cont. Multipoint teachers report to TRC the starting and stopping dates Always assume the mic is ON and tell your students to assume that as well Use landscape view and large print on documents

Logistics of Teaching I-TV cont. Give students a set of class rules and grading sheet Stay accessible to students by giving them an address and times to call Post a list of phone numbers in a convenient location

Logistics for I-TV Teaching cont. Clear transparencies are great to lay over pictures and graphs so that you can mark on them. Use a black ink pen or marker when writing on paper so that it will show up well. Answer sheets for tests are useful for faxing to grade quickly.

Realistic Expectations I-TV Teaching can be effective and enjoyable It will be more work for you, at least in the initial stages Expect technical difficulties—I-TV, Phone and fax School calendars will not match

Realistic Expectations cont. Bell times may vary, teacher’s bell is used unless different time is agreed upon You will not cover as much material Unusual events will happen—fire drill, etc.
