8 Introduction PURPOSE To provide students with the knowledge they need to make sound choices in areas that impact postsecondary access and postsecondary completion GOAL Provide speakers for school and community presentations on topics related to planning, preparing and paying for postsecondary education.

14  What is the commitment for people who volunteer to be approved speakers?

15 Commitment TIME As a Learn More – approved speaker, you will be contacted periodically to ask you to make a presentation. Whether you agree to present once a year, once a month, or once a week is up to you. PROFESSIONALISM As a Learn More Indiana approved speaker, you commit to having a professional appearance and manners (e.g. being on time).

16 Commitment CONTENT As a Learn More Indiana approved speaker, you commit to presenting content provided by Learn More Indiana. Slides may be rearranged or reworded to match the speaker’s presentation style, but presentation content may not be changed.

17 Commitment FEE / REIMBURSEMENT As a Learn More Indiana approved speaker, you agree to not charge a speaker fee to the host or be reimbursed for your time or expenses (mileage, printing, etc.). You understand that you are making Learn More Indiana presentations as a community service because you care about your community’s young people and economic future.

18  How do I apply to become a college success speaker approved by Learn More Indiana?

20  What happens after I am approved?

21 Speaker Application Process AFTER YOU ARE APPROVED 1.You will receive an approval email 2.You will be called periodically by Learning More Indiana with an invitation to present the presentations you selected in counties that you selected 3.If you say yes, you and the event host will receive emails of introduction.

22 Speaker Application Process AFTER YOU PRESENT 1.You will receive an email asking you to complete a survey about the event host. 2.The event host will receive an email asking him or her to complete a survey about your presentation Learn More will use this information to improve the Speakers Bureau program.

23  What tips I can follow to be a better presenter?

24 Speaker Tips KNOW THE CONTENT Take time to become very familiar with the content. Read the: Facilitator guide Slides Speaker notes Edit the slides to match your presentation style (but do not edit the content).

25 Speaker Tips PRACTICE THE PRESENTATION Ask a family member or friend to listen as you practice the presentation. TIMING: Note how long it takes you to make the presentation. Most presenters spend an average of 30 seconds per slide.

26 Speaker Tips EQUIPMENT Bring the following equipment with you or ask the event host to provide the equipment 1.Computer with presentation (or presentation file on a zip drive if host is providing the computer) 2.LCD projector 3.Extension cord 4.Power strip 5.Handouts (optional) Ask the host to have a microphone if the room is large and there will be over 50 participants.

27 Speaker Tips ARRIVAL AT THE SITE Get to the presentation site early. Have time to: 1.Get lost on your way to the site. 2.Find the presentation room 3.Set up and test your AV equipment 4.Distribute handouts if any 5.Have time to think about nothing else but your presentation

28 Speaker Tips STRESS Most speakers are nervous before their presentation. That’s normal. Remember that you are doing the presentation because you have information that will help kids. It doesn’t matter if you’re a little shaky because you’re sharing great information!

29 Speaker Tips PROFESSIONALISM 1.Dress appropriately 2.Be on time 3.Keep language, jokes and stories tasteful 4.Be courteous to your host and other presenters o No cell phone discussions o No texting o No side-bar conversations

30 Speaker Tips CONNECT 1.Great people at the door. Say hello, ask where they are from, smile. 2.When you’re presenting: o Speak clearly o Make eye contact o Look at people all over the room o Use a microphone if there are more than 50 people o Repeat questions so everyone can hear them o Pay attention. What’s the reaction of the audience?
