Ethnic Groups --This term indicates a group that is set apart from others primarily because of its national origin or distinctive cultural patterns. Racial Groups can contain Ethnic Sub Groups and vice versa.:. Importantly, individuals can often choose to identify or hide ethnic identity, but not race identity.

Minority, Racial, and Ethnic Groups An ethnic group is set apart from others based on national origin or distinctive cultural patterns. Ethnic groups in the United States include: Hispanic Americans Jewish Americans Irish Americans Italian Americans  Ethnicity

"Scientific Racism" from an American magazine, Harper’s Weekly, suggested that the Irish are similar to Negroes, and should be extinct! Biological Significance of Race --(obvious physical differences) arbitrarily chosen (like eye color) --There is more genetic variation within “races” than across them. (p.223) --varies by location and over time

Prejudice and Discrimination: The Vicious Cycle Hotel Rwanda Example tube.com/watc h?v=EqQfZoUi rCE Prejudice--a negative attitude toward an entire category of people, often an ethnic or racial minority. Discrimination --the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups based on some type of arbitrary bias. --persists even for educated and qualified minority group members. Prejudice= Attitude Discrimination = Action/behavior

Minority Groups A subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power (in society, over their own lives) than members of the dominant or majority group. Properties of a minority group can include: unequal treatment Distinguish- ing cultural characteris- tics involuntary membership Prejudice and Discrimination: The Vicious Cycle not necessarily a number thing! Women -Not numerical minority, but a minority group.

Prejudice and Discrimination: The Vicious Cycle Stereotypes --an unreliable generalization about all members of a group that do not recognize individual differences within the group. Racism--a belief that one race is supreme and all others are innately inferior. Ethnocentrism--the tendency to assume that one’s culture and way of life are superior to all others.
