Why is a standard measurement system important?
The Metric System. The metric system -It was formulated in France in the late 18 th century. -It became our legal standard of measure as its tables are.

Metric System Measurement and SI.
 Metric System  (international system of units or SI)  - A decimal system (based on 10) that scientists and everyone else in the world uses, except.
 Standard measure of a quantity  Examples › Length = Meter (m) › Volume = Liter (L) › Mass = Grams (g) › Temperature = Celcius (°C)
The Metric System Is used in nearly every country around the world. The United States of America doesn’t use the metric system for it’s primary measurement.

How would you measure…. A Football field? A drive in the car? Your weight? Kool-aid? UNITS!

Did you say…. A Football field? A drive in the car? Your weight? Kool-aid? UNITS! Meter Stick - Meters Meter Stick - Kilometers Scale - Newtons Graduated Cylinder - Liters

The Metric System Why the metric system? It’s easy to use - base 10 All scientists can understand Accepted all over the world

The Metric System Why the metric system? Scientists use the metric system to Measure length, volume, mass, weight, density, and temperature

The Metric System Why the metric system? Length is used to measure distance Volume is used to measure the amount of space an object takes up Mass is used to measure the amount of matter in an object Weight is used to measure the attraction between two objects due to gravity

The Metric System Why the metric system? Density is used to compare substances based on their mass and volume Density is defined as - the mass per unit volume of a substance Temperature is used to measure the average kinetic energy of a substance

Length Base unit - the meter 1 meter = 10 decimeters (dm) 1 meter = 100 centimeters (cm) 1 meter = 1000 millimeters (mm) 1 meter = micrometers (µm) 1 meter = nanometers (nm) 1 meter = angstroms (Å) 1000 meters = 1 kilometer (km)

Length Base unit - the meter 1 light year = 9.5 trillion kilometers Light travels at 300,000 kilometers per second

Volume Base unit - the liter 1 liter = 10 deciliters (dl) 1 liter = 100 centiliter (cl) 1 liter = 1000 milliliters (ml) 1 liter = 1000 cubic centimeters (cm 2 ) 1 liter = microliters (µl) 1000 liters = 1 kiloliter (kl)

Mass Base unit - the gram 1 gram = 10 decigrams (dg) 1 gram = 100 centigrams (cg) 1 grams = 1000 milligrams (mg) 1 gram = micrograms (µg) 1000 grams = 1 kilogram (kg)

Weight Base unit - the newton An object with a mass of 1 kilogram is pulled toward the earth with a force of 9.8 newtons so the weight of the object is 9.8 N An object with a mass of 50 kilograms weighs 490 N

Mass & Weight Mass does not change with location but weight does You have the same mass on earth as you would on the moon but your weight will change Your weight changes from sea level to the top of a mountain

Mass & Weight All objects exert a gravitational pull large objects have a greater pull than small objects The mass of Jupiter is 317 times that of earth which means you would weigh 317 times more on Jupiter The mass of the moon is 1/18 that of earth which means you would weigh 1/18 of what you weigh on earth

Density The relationship between mass and volume Mass Density = Volume Density of water = 1g/ml

Temperature Base unit - Celsius scale Water freezes at 0°C Water boils at 100ºC Normal body temp is 37ºC Room temp is ~ 21ºC

Dimensional Analysis or Unit Conversion Going from one unit to another Only units that measure to same thing Use a conversion factor 1 kilometer = 1000 meters or 1000 meters = 1 kilometer

Let’s Practice
