1 Measurement A way to describe the world with numbers.

2 Measurement Can answer: How much, how long, or how far?

3 Everyday Measurements

4 Tools of Measurement Stopwatches Meter-sticks Balances Thermometers

5 Metric System

6 International System (SI)
The SI system is the accepted system of measurement. Units are in multiples of 10. Which of these do not belong in the metric system?

7 Metric System We use these prefixes the most: kilo centi milli kilo
kilo hecto deca Base unit meter gram liter deci centi milli

8 Converting Units

9 Length Meter is basic unit.

10 Length 1000 meters = kilometer

11 Length

12 Length Use a centimeter to measure the length of a pencil.

13 Length 1 inch = 2.54 cm

14 Length 100 centimeters in a meter.

15 Length 1000 millimeters in a meter.

16 Converting Units Length

17 Mass Amount of matter in an object. More matter = more mass.
Electronic Balance Amount of matter in an object. More matter = more mass. Kilogram (kg) is used for large objects. Gram (g) for small objects. Triple Beam Balance

18 Mass Mass is the same no matter where in the universe the object is located. Weight = pull of gravity.

19 Converting Units: Mass

20 Weight Gravity exerts force on an object. More mass = greater weight
Weight changes depending on location. Unit = newtons (N)

21 Weight A brick & sponge have the same volume.
Brick has more mass so, it weighs more.

22 Weight

23 Volume Amount of space something occupies. L x W x H

24 Volume Height of box = 2 Width = 3 Length = 6 2 x 3 x 6 = 36
36 cubes like the red one would take up the same amount of space as this box.

25 Volume of Solids Unit is meters cubed cm3 L X W x H

26 Liquid Volume Liters & milliliters are the units.
Meniscus is the curve at the surface of a liquid. Read at lowest point.

27 Volume of Irregular Shaped Solids
Use water displacement. liters or mL rather than cm3

28 Converting Units Volume

29 Converting Units (Volume)
45 mL = 4.5 centiliters cL) 45 mL = .45 deciliters (dL) 45 mL = liters (L) 45 mL = dekaliters (dkL) 45 mL = hectoliters (hL) 45 mL = kiloliters (kL) kilo hecto deca Base unit meter gram liter deci centi milli

30 Temperature How hot or cold a substance is. We use degrees Celsius ºC.

31 Temperature Water freezes at 0º C. Water boils at 100º C

32 Measuring Temperature

33 Density Amount of matter in a given volume.
measure mass & volume of an object to find density. Unit = g/mL3

34 Density
